Peters was sentenced to over eight years in prison for tampering with voting equipment. Trump criticized Democrats, accusing them of hypocrisy for prosecuting Peters while ignoring other crimes. Colorado officials, including Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser, rejected the pardon&#8217;s legal validity, emphasizing that a president cannot pardon state convictions. As presidential pardons are traditionally only granted for federal charges, it may not have an effect. Jared Polis (D-CO) said in a statement, &ldquo;No President has jurisdiction over state law nor the power to pardon a person for state convictions. This is a matter for the courts to decide, and we will abide by court orders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The idea that a president could pardon someone tried and convicted in state court has no precedent in American law, would be an outrageous departure from what our constitution requires, and will not hold up,&rdquo; Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser told <em>Axios<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
