Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani rather than on established figures like California Governor gavin Newsom. Dhillon described AOC and Mamdani as charismatic and possibly more promising leaders for the party. The Democrats are aiming to sustain their recent electoral momentum through upcoming midterms and beyond. The party&rsquo;s winning streak <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3912970\/democrats-set-expanded-targets-surprise-victories-florida-georgia\/\">continued this week<\/a>, with Democratic candidates winning Miami&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chicago-mayoral-race-paul-vallas-holds-lead-over-brandon-johnson-in-latest-polls-ahead-of-early-voting\/\" title=\"Chicago mayoral ...: Paul Vallas holds lead over Brandon Johnson in latest polls ahead of early voting\">mayoral runoff election<\/a> and a Georgia state House race on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond next year, two of the three Democrats that Dhillon mentioned are potentially gearing up for high-profile elections toward the end of President Donald Trump&rsquo;s second term.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez is speculated to be running for either the White House or Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer&rsquo;s (D-NY) seat in 2028. She has not announced her candidacy for either race.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Newsom said he is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3864478\/newsom-considering-2028-run-calls-trump-invasive-species\/\">heavily considering<\/a> a run for the presidency in three years. However, he won&rsquo;t make a decision until the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-elections\/\">2026 elections<\/a> are over. His second and final term as California governor ends in January 2027.<\/p>\n<p>A 2028 presidential campaign launched by Newsom would follow his <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3875781\/newsoms-big-proposition-50-win-turns-him-to-leading-2028-white-house-contender\/\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-trades-barbs-with-newsom-over-latest-texas-redistricting-ruling\/\" title=\"DOJ trades barbs with ... over latest Texas redistricting ruling\">mid-decade redistricting win<\/a><\/a> in California&rsquo;s special election last month when voters approved Proposition 50. The ballot measure started the process for redrawing the state&rsquo;s congressional map, allowing California Democrats to gain up to five more House seats.<\/p>\n<p>Dhillon, who serves as assistant attorney general for the Justice Department&rsquo;s Civil Rights Division, is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3886570\/doj-challenges-californias-prop-50-map-in-escalating-fight-over-house-majority\/\">suing the Newsom administration<\/a> for adopting the redistricting ballot measure that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >allegedly gerrymandered congressional districts based<\/a> on race in violation of the 14th Amendment&rsquo;s Equal Protection Clause.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by Devine whether the California governor has a viable political future, Dhillon appeared quite unimpressed.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t like his style and his lack of class,&rdquo; she said of Newsom. &ldquo;This person isn&rsquo;t untested like Obama was in a way where there was this entire fiction created around him. He&rsquo;s been tested. He&rsquo;s been a governor. He is still facing backlash from the natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom is preparing to release a memoir in February 2026, providing readers a &ldquo;truly vulnerable&rdquo; look at his second term.
