The ACLU, joined by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the New York Civil Liberties Union, wants the DOJ&#8217;s Office of Legal Counsel memo that allegedly legitimizes these strikes and grants immunity to those involved from criminal prosecution. the lawsuit highlights concerns over the legality and morality of the strikes, especially given doubts about the evidence used to label the targets as &#8220;narco-terrorists.&#8221; The ACLU criticized these operations as unlawful killings of civilians and called for accountability for officials authorizing them, including Pentagon official Pete Hegseth. simultaneously occurring, Hegseth and other national security officials are set to brief congressional committees on the strikes. ACLU attorney Jeffrey Stein said in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/rights-groups-sue-trump-administration-for-legal-justification-of-deadly-boat-strikes\">statement announcing the lawsuit<\/a>, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU, along with the Center for Constitutional Rights and the New York Civil Liberties Union, is suing to obtain a memo from the DOJ&rsquo;s Office of Legal Counsel that &ldquo;apparently blesses the ongoing strikes as lawful acts.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;According to news accounts, the memo also purports to immunize personnel who authorized or took part in these unlawful strikes from future criminal prosecution for what would otherwise simply be homicides,&rdquo; a press release from the ACLU reads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU had previously sought to obtain the memo through a Freedom of Information Act request <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/rights-groups-demand-legal-memo-on-trumps-executions-of-alleged-drug-smugglers-in-caribbean\">in October<\/a>, but said this week that the government had failed to release the records.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stein called the strikes &ldquo;illegal and immoral,&rdquo; saying that Hegseth and other officials who authorized the military to carry out operations targeting the suspected drug boats &ldquo;must be held accountable.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The same day the ACLU sued the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/trump-administration\/\">Trump administration<\/a>, Hegseth and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-call-for-formal-pentagon-investigation-into-bungled-afghanistan-withdrawal\/\" title=\"Republicans Call for Formal Pentagon Investigation Into Bungled Afghanistan Withdrawal\">senior national security officials<\/a> were expected to head to Capitol Hill to brief the House and Senate Intelligence Committees on the controversial strikes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/3910298\/ndaa-limit-pentagon-ability-reduce-troops-european-presence\/\"><strong>NDAA DRAFT WOULD LIMIT PENTAGON&rsquo;S ABILITY TO REDUCE EUROPEAN PRESENCE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, Hegseth <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/3910991\/ndaa-pete-hegseth-boat-strikes-travel-budget\/\">could be required<\/a> to submit the unedited footage of all boat strikes conducted against suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean Sea or else face travel budget cuts, according to language included in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Justice Department was also hit with a request from a coalition of former federal ethics officials requesting an internal DOJ investigation into the legal opinion justifying the strikes. The ethics counsels for former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W.
