This call comes after the Trump management deployed ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents to New Orleans as part of &#8220;Operation Catahoula Crunch,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/secy-mayorkas-orders-i-c-e-to-stop-raiding-workplaces-for-illegal-immigrants\/\" title=\"Secy. Mayorkas orders I.C.E. to stop raiding workplaces for illegal immigrants\">targeting illegal immigrants<\/a> and violent criminals. Murrill warned that NOPD policies hindering collaboration with federal immigration enforcement could violate state law and lead to legal penalties. She recommended that officers fully cooperate with federal agencies. Additionally, the Trump administration plans to send National guard troops to Louisiana to assist with law enforcement amid rising violent crime and law enforcement shortages. FOR IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN IN NEW ORLEANS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response, Murrill sent <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aglizmurrill.com\/Files\/Article\/392\/Documents\/NOPDSanctuaryLetter-Final.pdf\">a letter<\/a> to the head of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-orleans\/\">New Orleans<\/a> Police Department, warning Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick that some NOPD policies &ldquo;appear&rdquo; to conflict with state laws prohibiting sanctuary policies that extend certain protections to residents without legal status.<\/p>\n<p>The NOPD &ldquo;must use best efforts to support the enforcement of federal <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/policy\/immigration\/\">immigration<\/a> law,&rdquo; Murrill wrote, and abandon policies &ldquo;specifically designed and implemented to frustrate, hinder, and prevent cooperation&rdquo; with ICE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;At this time, I recommend that you immediately direct NOPD officers and staff to fully cooperate with ICE and CPB,&rdquo; the attorney general told Kirkpatrick. &ldquo;Every <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/police-and-law-enforcement\/\">law enforcement officer<\/a> in this state has a duty to support all duly enacted federal and state laws for the benefit of the communities we serve.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Murrill added a warning of possible penalties to follow if NOPD failed to heed the attorney general&rsquo;s office: &ldquo;Policies that fundamentally require officers and employees to refuse to cooperate with ICE, except in very limited circumstances, violate Louisiana law and could subject the offender to felony prosecution or malfeasance in office.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>New Orleans is the latest city to see federal sweeps targeting illegal immigrants. The Trump administration had previously authorized operations in Chicago, Los Angeles, Charlotte, North Carolina,  and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to operations in those cities, President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> has promised to send <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/national-guard\/\">National Guard<\/a> troops to provide additional support and protection for ICE and CBP agents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Tuesday the state&rsquo;s Republican governor had requested assistance from the National Guard. Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) said Monday that Trump had promised the troops would arrive before Christmas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The military will deploy to New Orleans and other cities to discourage &ldquo;violent crime&ldquo; that is &ldquo;causing citizens not to feel safe in their communities,&rdquo; the governor said.
