The city claims these products are harmful and were aggressively marketed, including to children, contributing to increased rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancers. City Attorney David Chiu criticizes these companies for making food that is &#8220;unrecognizable and harmful&#8221; and holding them responsible for the damage caused. san Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie emphasized the need for openness so families can make informed choices. The city and county of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/san-francisco\/\">San Francisco<\/a> are suing 10 companies for manufacturing everything from sodas to candy bars and breakfast cereals &ndash;&nbsp;what the municipality calls unhealthy, &ldquo;ultra-processed&rdquo; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/food\/\">foods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there&rsquo;s no agreed-upon scientific definition of &ldquo;ultra-processed,&rdquo; Chiu said in a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sfcityattorney.org\/san-francisco-city-attorney-chiu-sues-largest-manufacturers-of-ultra-processed-foods\/\">news release<\/a>. &ldquo;They took food and made it unrecognizable and harmful to the human body.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We must be clear that this is not about consumers making better choices,&rdquo; Chiu continued. &ldquo;Recent surveys show Americans want to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >avoid ultra-processed foods<\/a>, but we are inundated by them. These companies engineered a public health crisis, they profited handsomely, and now they need to take responsibility for the harm they have caused.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The suit accuses the manufactured food industry of using &ldquo;deceitful tactics it inherited from the Big Tobacco industry to flood the market with harmful UPF [ultra-processed food] products and to aggressively&nbsp;sell those products to children.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The increase in ultra-processed foods has resulted in hikes in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancers and other life-changing chronic illnesses, according to the suit.<\/p>\n<p>And there&rsquo;s a need for better transparency, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;San Francisco families deserve to know what&rsquo;s in their food,&rdquo; he said in the news release. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not going to let our residents be misled about the products in our grocery stores.
