It explains the difference between pardons, which forgive crimes and erase criminal records, and commutations, which reduce sentences without clearing convictions. Since January, Trump has granted clemency to various individuals, including many January 6 Capitol riot defendants. His mass pardon of over 1,500 people associated with the riot was one of the largest clemency acts in history, including prominent figures like Enrique Tarrio and those convicted of assaulting police officers.

other notable acts of clemency include pardons or commutations for political figures, supporters, and controversial individuals such as Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, former Chicago gang leader Larry Hoover, reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley, former Congressman Michael Grimm, and the creator of the Silk Road darknet market Ross Ulbricht. Trump also pardoned former illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, and issued clemency to others like Devon Archer, Scott Jenkins, Jeremy Hutchinson, former Cincinnati City Councilman Alexander “P.G.” Sittenfeld, and two DC police officers convicted in a fatal chase case.

Many of thes pardons have sparked criticism for seeming to favor political allies, supporters, or donors, while others like Joe Exotic and various others remain unpardoned. Trump justified his sweeping pardons often by citing the complexity of cases or political motivations. the article presents a complete list and overview of Trump’s impactful and controversial use of executive clemency in his return to office.

Trump pardons and commutations: Notable acts of clemency in his second term

Since the start of his second term, President Donald Trump has utilized pardons and commutations to address what he has deemed injustices dealt by the justice system.

A pardon essentially forgives a crime and its consequences — a conviction is wiped from the person’s criminal record, and they no longer have to serve a sentence for it. Conversely, a commutation reduces the sentence but doesn’t exonerate the person of a crime.

Recommended Stories

Trump pardons Democratic Rep.
