This agreement comes after the city’s examination found that Starbucks violated the Fair workweek Law by denying workers predictable schedules, reducing hours by 15%, and restricting extra shifts. The settlement compensates employees $50 for each week worked between July 4, 2021, and July 7, 2024.

The labor dispute gained attention when New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders joined striking Starbucks workers in Brooklyn, expressing solidarity over issues of fair wages and working conditions. The strike, part of the “Red Cup Rebellion,” was driven by starbucks Workers United’s demand for higher pay and better contract terms after negotiations failed.

Starbucks stated the payout was a compliance measure with local law rather than compensation for unpaid wages, emphasizing their commitment to lawful operations despite the complexities of the law. The case highlights ongoing tensions between large corporations and workers advocating for better labor rights and fair scheduling practices.

Starbucks to pay more than $38 million to NYC workers

Starbucks will dole out more than $38 million to workers after New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) joined striking employees.

Mayor Eric Adams announced the settlement on Monday, which is the largest in the city’s history.

Recommended Stories

Seattle orgs urge residents to shop local on Small Business Saturday

Arizonan fights city hall, wins battle in fight to build hotel

In-store Black Friday crowds underwhelm as online shopping surges

“Starbucks violated the Fair Workweek Law and thousands of employees were denied predictable schedules and additional shifts they had a right to,” he wrote on X.

“Thanks to our work, they’re able to get some money back.
