Recent productions include the series *Miss Austen* on Masterpiece Theater, the French film *Jane Austen Wrecked My Life*, and upcoming Netflix and Britbox adaptations of her novels.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond romance, austen&#8217;s life and writings reflect the complexities of Regency England, influenced by her anglican faith, family ties, and social conditions. Even though she gained modest recognition in her lifetime, her literary legacy has grown immensely.<\/p>\n<p>Fans can celebrate Austen&#8217;s genius in various ways: by taking free online courses, hosting Austen-themed tea parties, watching classic and new film adaptations, studying her life through tours and biographies, and exploring her deep faith via her preserved prayers and devotional books. Libraries, bookstores, and literary clubs have hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themorgan.org\/press\/2025\/jane-austen-250-exhibition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">events<\/a>, and historical sites and museums <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1BsyTvRedF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have held<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/janeausten.co.uk\/pages\/festival-event-grand-regency-costumed-promenade?srsltid=AfmBOorXL1_4zWGvuJtAj23c9A5a7gAHcmMP1bS8iE4QFdeWe5k7AaSz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">costumed galas<\/a> for legions of Austen devotees.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that Jane Austen&rsquo;s life and novels are more popular than ever, spawning a cottage industry of Austen-inspired gifts, books, and products for diehard fans as well as new followers of her work.<\/p>\n<p>The television and movie industries have also capitalized on this occasion by offering new renditions of the old classics. Masterpiece Theater&rsquo;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/miss-austen-returns-masterpiece-sequel-keeley-hawes-bbc-1236432908\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miss Austen<\/a><\/em>, based on the novel by Gill Hornsby, debuted this year, with plans to film a second season. SONY released the French independent film <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/file:\/\/\/Users\/joshuamonnington\/Downloads\/SONY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Jane Austen Wrecked My Life<\/em><\/a>  in the U.S., and Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/pride-and-prejudice-cast-photos-release-date-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will soon be streaming<\/a> a version of <em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em> starring Olivia Colman and Jack Lowden. Britbox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brit.co\/the-other-bennet-sister-britbox\/#:~:text=Where%20can%20I%20watch%20The,premieres%20on%20BBC%20in%202026.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is working on an adaptation<\/a> of Janice Hadlow&rsquo;s novel <em>The Other Bennet Sister, <\/em>with hopes of a 2026 release.<\/p>\n<p>A casual reader may dismiss Austen as a precursor to Chick Lit, but her life and novels are much more complicated than the stuff of romance. In dismissing the genius of Austen, critics are neglecting to consider the complexity of Austen&rsquo;s life and the societal rules and norms of Regency England.<\/p>\n<p>Austen was the daughter of an Anglican clergyman, and her deep faith and moral compass are reflected in many of her characters. As a sister to brothers <a href=\"https:\/\/jasna.org\/publications-2\/persuasions-online\/volume-45-no-1\/kindreds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who fought<\/a> in the Napoleonic Wars, she understood the political climate of her time. And while one brother had the privilege of becoming wealthy landed gentry, she experienced a genteel poverty, along with her mother and elder sister, after their father&rsquo;s death.<\/p>\n<p>Austen saw a small degree of acclaim after the publication of several of her novels, but nothing near the notoriety that was gained after her death at the age of 41. Her six finished novels, along with several incomplete works, still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-approval-rating-drops-below-50\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Approval Rating Drops Below 50%\">remain popular<\/a> two centuries later. That is no small feat for a spinster clergyman&rsquo;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we can celebrate the genius that is Jane Austen in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Take an Online Course<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hillsdale College offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/online.hillsdale.edu\/courses\/promo\/jane-austen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free online course<\/a> on the famous writer, &ldquo;The Young Jane Austen: Northanger Abbey.&rdquo; Taught by English professor Lorraine Murphy, this course explores the early life and writing of Austen in a series of six lessons while exploring Austen&rsquo;s early gothic novel.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Host an Austen-Inspired Tea Party<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>What could be more British than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wow-stop-the-steal-arrivesthe-hour-of-action-video\/\" title=\"WOW! And yes, I&rsquo;m looking at you, <em>Persuasion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Miss Austen<\/em><em><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Released in May 2025, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/masterpiece\/shows\/miss-austen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four-part series<\/a> featuring Keeley Hawes tells the story of Jane&rsquo;s sister, Cassandra, who was notorious for burning most of Jane&rsquo;s correspondence after her death in an effort to secure her legacy. Based on the novel by Gill Hornsby.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Sanditon<\/em><em><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Based on Austen&rsquo;s unfinished novel, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/masterpiece\/shows\/sanditon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BBC series<\/a> enjoyed three seasons and ended in 2023.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em><em><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Austen fans have opinions, and they share them strongly when it comes to their favorite Mr. Darcy. Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen? Watch the 1995 series followed by the 2005 film and cast your own vote.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Emma <\/em><em><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>The title character may well be the least likable Austen heroine for readers, and yet the book has spawned many movie versions. Watch <em>Clueless<\/em> (1995) with Alicia Silverstone for a fun retelling.<\/p>\n<p>Other movies worth watching: <em>Sense and Sensibility<\/em> (1995), <em>Mansfield Park<\/em> (1999), <em>Persuasion<\/em> (2007), and <em>Love and Friendship<\/em> (2016).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Study Austen&rsquo;s Life<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Readers are fascinated by Austen&rsquo;s life, and British touring companies <a href=\"https:\/\/strictlyjaneausten.com\/bespoke-group-tours-jane-austens-bath-and-hampshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have offered<\/a> pilgrimages to historical sites such as Steventon, Bath, and Chawton, culminating with a visit to Winchester Cathedral, Austen&rsquo;s final resting place. Armchair travelers can find all they need to know about Austen&rsquo;s daily life &mdash; from the books she read and the foods she ate to the flowers and trees in her gardens &mdash; in books like the following: <em>Jane Austen at Home<\/em> by Lucy Worsley; <em>Jane Austen&rsquo;s Garden<\/em> by Molly Williams; <em>Jane Austen&rsquo;s Bookshelf<\/em> by Rebecca Romney; <em>Becoming Jane Austen<\/em> by Jon Spence; <em>Jane Austen, A Life<\/em> by Carol Shields; and <em>A Walk with Jane Austen<\/em> by Lori Smith.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Read Austen&rsquo;s Prayers<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Austen&rsquo;s faith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Austens-Anglicanism-Laura-Mooneyham-White\/dp\/1409418634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was an important part<\/a> of her daily life. She was well-catechized in the church, with <a href=\"https:\/\/jasna.org\/austen\/more-on-jane-austens-life\/churches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a father and two brothers<\/a> entering the clergy. As a family unit, they shared morning and evening prayers, grace before meals, and two worship services each Sunday. They spent evenings reading poetry, literature, and Jane&rsquo;s witty writing. They also read sermons and Scripture together. She faithfully lived out her vocation as daughter, sister, aunt, and neighbor through familial visits or letters of encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>It should not come as a surprise that this wordsmith also <a href=\"https:\/\/jasna.org\/persuasions\/printed\/number16\/stovel.htm?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">composed her own prayers<\/a>. Three of these prayers were written in Jane&rsquo;s own hand and saved for posterity, offering us a rare glimpse into Austen&rsquo;s heart and soul.
