During this period of limited transparency, the union funneled approximately $15.8 million into liberal political campaigns and candidates, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and other allies. While donations from the union’s political action committee fluctuated between 2019 and 2024, they have substantially increased in recent years. This lack of financial openness led some union members to sue CTU in October 2024, demanding a proper audit.Additionally, analyses revealed a decline in the union’s spending on member depiction and concerns about misuse of funds within Chicago Public Schools. The Republican-led House Committee on Education and workforce has launched a congressional examination into CTU’s finances, highlighting violations of union bylaws and members’ rights to transparency.although CTU’s lawyers dismissed the investigation as a “waste of time,” the union has agreed to cooperate and plans to provide requested documents by December 22,2024,noting that some financial information has since been made available internally following the lawsuit.

Chicago teachers union funneled millions to liberals while keeping members in the dark about finances

The Chicago Teachers Union has fallen years behind in fulfilling its obligation to provide members with an independent audit of its finances.
