Speaking during a press briefing on Air Force One,Trump declined to reveal the name but implied an proclamation would be forthcoming. Powell has served as Fed chairman sence Febuary 2018, having been nominated by Trump during his first term. However, the relationship between Trump and powell has been strained, particularly over Powell&#8217;s decisions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/morgan-stanley-threat-of-high-inflation-is-real\/\" title=\"Morgan Stanley: Threat of high inflation is real\">raise interest rates<\/a>. Despite speculation that Trump wants to replace Powell, legal constraints prevent Trump from doing so until Powell&#8217;s term ends in May 2026. Trump is reportedly considering five finalists for the nomination, including Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, who is widely seen as Trump&#8217;s preferred candidate. We&rsquo;ll be announcing it.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Powell has been chairman of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/federal-reserve\/\">Federal Reserve<\/a> since February 2018. Trump nominated him during his first term in November 2017. The two had a falling out shortly after Powell began his term, following his decision to raise interest rates in 2018. After Trump&rsquo;s second term began in January 2025, tensions with Powell resumed, again over interest rates. This has led to speculation that Trump would seek to replace Powell. However, due to legal restraints, Trump is unable to do so. Powell&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-to-headline-north-carolina-gop-convention-this-summer\/\" title=\"... To Headline North Carolina GOP Convention This Summer\">current term ends<\/a> in May 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that Trump has narrowed down his choice for the nomination to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/who-will-replace-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell-a-look-at-the-5-finalists-194938493.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five people<\/a>: Hassett, currently the director of the National Economic Council; Chris Waller and Michelle Bowman, members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve; Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor; and Rick Rieder, head of fixed income at BlackRock.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hassett has been widely speculated as being Trump&rsquo;s preferred choice to replace Powell. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reportedly vetting candidates, and an announcement could happen before Christmas, according to reports.
