During a press briefing on Air Force One, Trump was asked about the nomination, and even though he did not reveal the name, he confirmed he had made his decision. Powell has served as Fed chair since 2018 after being nominated by Trump but has faced criticism from him, particularly over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/speaker-pelosi-promises-to-pass-bill-to-suspend-debt-limit\/\" title=\"Speaker Pelosi promises to pass bill to suspend debt limit\">interest rate increases<\/a>. Despite Trump&#8217;s preference to replace Powell earlier, legal constraints prevent him from doing so before Powell&#8217;s term ends in May 2026. The likely candidates include Kevin Hassett (director of the National Economic Council), Federal Reserve governors Chris Waller and Michelle Bowman, former Fed governor Kevin Warsh, and Rick Rieder of BlackRock. Hassett is widely believed to be trump&#8217;s favored choice. We&rsquo;ll be announcing it.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Powell has served as Chair of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/federal-reserve\/\">Federal Reserve<\/a> since February 2018. Trump nominated him during his first term in November 2017. The two had a falling out shortly after Powell began his term, following his decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >raise interest rates<\/a> in 2018. After Trump&rsquo;s second term began in January 2025, tensions with Powell resumed, again over interest rates. This has led to speculation that Trump would seek to replace Powell. However, due to legal restraints, Trump is unable to do so. Powell&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-to-headline-north-carolina-gop-convention-this-summer\/\" title=\"... To Headline North Carolina GOP Con...ntion This Summer\">current term ends<\/a> in May 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that Trump has narrowed down his choice for the nomination to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/who-will-replace-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell-a-look-at-the-5-finalists-194938493.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five people<\/a>: Hassett, currently the director of the National Economic Council; Chris Waller and Michelle Bowman, members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve; Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor; and Rick Rieder, head of fixed income at BlackRock.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hassett has been widely speculated as being Trump&rsquo;s preferred choice to replace Powell. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reportedly vetting candidates, and an announcement could happen before Christmas, according to reports.
