Many states in <a href=\"https:\/\/electricityrates.com\/massachusetts\/massachusetts-electricity-expensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/electricityrates.com\/massachusetts\/massachusetts-electricity-expensive\/\">New England<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/electricityrates.com\/resources\/new-england-electricity-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crippled<\/a> by high energy costs, a region of the country that has <a href=\"https:\/\/yankeeinstitute.org\/2022\/01\/11\/policy-corner-with-gas-pipelines-blocked-new-england-leans-on-oil-and-coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/yankeeinstitute.org\/2022\/01\/11\/policy-corner-with-gas-pipelines-blocked-new-england-leans-on-oil-and-coal\/\">cracked down<\/a> on natural gas pipelines and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catf.us\/2024\/12\/building-2050-clean-energy-infrastructure-power-new-englands-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enacted<\/a> strict green energy mandates.<\/p>\n<p>The IER <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/the-grid\/lawrence-berkeley-national-laboratory-reports-on-rising-electricity-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> that many states seeing cost spikes &ldquo;mandate renewable energy&rdquo; are in &ldquo;New England and Middle Atlantic regions and are members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative &mdash; a group of 11 states that have a cap-and-trade mechanism, which is essentially a tax on the use of fossil fuels in the utility sector.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&ldquo;Renewables&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/the-grid\/lawrence-berkeley-national-laboratory-reports-on-rising-electricity-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> from IER and energy policy expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexperiment.org\/about\/staff\/isaac-orr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaac Orr<\/a> assert that &ldquo;renewable&rdquo; energy like wind and solar drive up transmission costs because the turbines and solar farms tend to be sited far from where people live.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The biggest costs of wind and solar are obviously not fuel. They&rsquo;re not on the generation side,&rdquo; Orr told the Daily Caller News Foundation. &ldquo;The problem is that wind and solar requires a lot of land, so it has to be built a long way from population sites. So, that means you need transmission to get it to people that can use it, and because it&rsquo;s intermittent, you need to have some sort of backup&hellip; Whether that&rsquo;s batteries or natural gas or whatever it is, you have to have some sort of backup.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Utilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Energy sector experts like Isaac have argued that utilities are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theunseenandtheunsaid.com\/p\/deregulated-energy-markets-still\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">far from deregulated<\/a> and need to be free from political mandates that drive up costs.<\/p>\n<p>As he put it, &ldquo;regulated utilities are still clinging to Paris aligned Net Zero pledges that reward costly spending on unreliable wind, solar, and batteries.
