Adams submitted nominations for the Board of health, Environmental Control Board, adn City planning Commission, but the council refused to approve any, showing deference to Mamdani’s incoming team, which is expected to take a different direction. Some nominees included former Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi and Drug Policy alliance Executive Director Kassandra Frederique. City Hall criticized the council’s move, accusing outgoing Speaker Adrienne adams of a “personal vendetta” against the current administration. Several nominees have withdrawn amid the impasse. Adams, who ended his reelection bid after a corruption scandal, is also trying to appoint members to the Rent Guidelines Board, significant for rent stabilization policies that Mamdani aims to influence. Meanwhile, Mamdani’s transition has informed over 170 of Adams’s staff they will not continue after January 1, a routine move for a new administration, though Adams’s team called it political gamesmanship. The mayor-elect’s team insists the changes are necessary to implement their agenda effectively.

New York City Council slaps down Eric Adams’s last-minute appointments

The New York City Council, in preparation for Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, stonewalled Mayor Eric Adams‘s attempts to appoint people to key governing bodies.

Adams’s administration submitted five Board of Health nominations as well as appointments to the Environmental Control Board and the City Planning Commission to the council last month.

Recommended Stories

Voter discrimination lawsuit against New York town moves forward

Audit shows millions in questionable taxpayer spending at former college

Youngkin rules out Senate run but leaves door open for presidential bid

Council staff informed the nominees that none would be approved out of deference to Mamdani’s incoming administration, Politico reported, which is likely to diverge significantly from Adams’s. She said the administration asked the council to act on its Board of Health nominations for the past two months and the reappointments for the past few years.

Adams dropped his reelection bid in late September after his corruption scandal tanked his public support.
