It highlights that about 8.5 million illegal immigrants have jobs due to factors such as employers paying under the table, unknowingly hiring people who commit document fraud, or employing non-U.S. citizens authorized to work temporarily. The largest employment sectors for these workers are construction, accommodation, food services, and manufacturing.

Illegal immigrants often secure jobs through informal arrangements, including gig work or positions in small businesses, making government tracking difficult. although all U.S. employers must verify employees’ work authorization via the I-9 form, some immigrants working off the books still pay taxes using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers.

The article also outlines the legal consequences for employers who hire illegal immigrants, including fines and potential criminal prosecution under federal law, wiht penalties ranging from thousands of dollars to imprisonment. Enforcement efforts by agencies like ICE fluctuate depending on administration priorities, but investigations and raids targeting employers hiring undocumented workers continue.

the piece presents how illegal immigration intersects with the U.S. labor market, corporate use of visa programs for cheaper labor, and the complexities around law enforcement and economic impact.

How millions of illegal immigrants got jobs in the US

Democrats say enforcing immigration laws and cutting back on visa programs would hurt the economy and make many goods and services more expensive. These include workers hired at home improvement stores or as house cleaners who offer their services on social media marketplaces, as well as businesses such as landscaping companies and restaurants.

All employers in the U.S. are legally required to verify that new hires have completed an I-9 form, which requires the applicant’s Social Security number, proof of identity, and work authorization documentation.

Select immigrants navigating immigration proceedings in court or who are temporarily protected from deportation may be issued a Social Security card for the purpose of working legally in the U.S., but this document does not confer U.S. citizenship or lawful presence.

The Bipartisan Policy Center defended workers who are illegal immigrants and said many choose to file federal taxes on their own at the year’s end despite working off the books. In this case, workers without Social Security numbers use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the Internal Revenue Service to report income and pay taxes on what they earn.

“Many undocumented immigrants find ways to legally pay both federal income and payroll taxes even if they don’t have a Social Security number (which is normally required) and even if their income was earned by working illegally,” the BPC wrote in an analysis on illegal immigrants in the workplace.

“Though there are many undocumented immigrants who are paid ‘under the table’ for their work and do not pay taxes on their income, many others do pay in the hope that it will someday help them become citizens,” the BPC analysis stated.

In this Dec. 5, 2019 photo, workers, most from Mexico, load Christmas trees onto a truck at Hupp Farms in Silverton, Ore. The bill’s fate in the Senate is unclear, and the White House hasn’t said if President Donald Trump would sign it. But the 260-165 vote was a rare stroke of bipartisanship on immigration.
