Trump has hinted he might back a primary challenger against her.

Greene cited the possibility of a Democratic-controlled House after the next midterms and a potential new impeachment of Trump, which would place her in a difficult position as a Trump supporter who has also been opposed by him financially. She expressed concern for her constituents and family, wanting to avoid a painful primary fight fueled by Trump’s opposition.

Her decision to delay her resignation until early January is seen by some as a strategic move to secure her federal pension, which vests after five years of service on January 3, 2026. Critics, including progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and right-wing activist Laura loomer, accused her of timing her departure for financial gain, also raising allegations of insider trading. Despite her rhetoric against the political establishment, many view her resignation as proving the vrey distrust in politicians that helped her rise. After leaving Congress, Greene is expected to capitalize on media deals, books, and speaking engagements.

When GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced her upcoming resignation unexpectedly on Friday night, she railed against the “political industrial complex” that dominates government, saying that “not one elected leader like me is able to stop Washington’s machine from gradually destroying our country.”

Indeed, the Georgia Republican’s rise to prominence was in part due to the fact that Americans — especially conservatives — don’t trust politicians. And, in her final act, she chose to demonstrate why we don’t.

Greene dropped the surprise announcement on social media as the D.C. political machine was packing up for the weekend — usually the time when you drop news you want to bury. But Greene wasn’t quitting because of scandal, she said, but because of a bedrock fact: She’d hitched her fortunes to the MAGA movement, and MAGA had mostly abandoned her after her break with President Donald Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Trump had even indicated he would support an opponent challenging Greene in a Republican primary “if the right person runs.”

In her announcement, Greene alluded to that, as well as the possibility that the House could be under Democratic control after next year’s midterms. Her prominence partly stemmed from widespread distrust of politicians among Americans-especially conservatives-and in her final move, she demonstrated why that distrust exists. Greene made the surprise announcement on social media as political activity in D.C. was winding down for the weekend-a common time to release news one hopes will be overlooked. She insisted she wasn’t stepping down due to scandal but because she had aligned herself with the MAGA movement, which largely abandoned her after she broke with former President Donald Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump even suggested he might back a primary challenger against her “if the right person runs.” In her statement, Greene hinted at this and also mentioned concerns about Democrats potentially gaining control of the House after next year’s midterms. She seemed to foresee another impeachment attempt against Trump, which would place her in an impossible position.

Greene expressed love for both her constituents and family and said she didn’t want them subjected to a painful primary battle initiated by Trump-whom they all supported-only to then have to defend him against impeachment after he spent tens of millions opposing and trying to destroy her.

She announced that she would resign on January 5, 2026; under Georgia law, this will trigger a special election early next year.

The timing surprised many-not only because Trump welcomed New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House that same day despite their prior mutual accusations but also because Greene isn’t leaving immediately or even soon after announcing it. This delay could be intended to avoid disruption for constituents or allow officials time for a smooth transition preventing a Democratic upset in Georgia’s strongly Republican 14th District-or it might reflect savvy political calculation.

Notably, Greene’s resignation date comes just after reaching five years of service-the threshold required for federal lawmakers’ lifetime pension benefits-which vests on January 3, 2026.

Critics like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pointed out this timing alongside allegations that Greene profited from insider stock trading while in office: “She is carefully timing her departure just days after qualifying for pension benefits and following millions earned through stock trades related to weapons manufacturers,” AOC wrote.

Even right-wing activist Laura Loomer agreed with AOC on this point: “MTG decided to resign right after securing pension eligibility-it’s always been about money.”

If Greene truly acted out of principle, critics argue she should quit immediately rather than waiting for financial gain.
