CAIR argues that this designation was made without due process and violates their First Amendment rights. Although CAIR has never faced criminal terrorism charges in the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >federal prosecutors previously identified<\/a> the group as an &#8220;unindicted co-conspirator&#8221; in a terrorism-support case involving Hamas, and the FBI severed ties with CAIR in 2009 due to alleged connections. The United Arab emirates also designated CAIR as a terrorist group in 2014 over ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which CAIR denies. Abbott claims CAIR has attempted to impose Sharia law in Texas and supports terrorism, while CAIR accuses Abbott of religious bigotry. On Iran\u2019s IRGC In Exchange For Public Commitment: Report\">foreign terrorist organization designation<\/a><\/h1>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-title-line\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<div id=\"Brid_2256567\" class=\"tpd-featured-video bridtv\"><\/div>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cair\/\">Council for American Islamic Relations<\/a> sued the state of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/texas\/\">Texas<\/a> on Thursday over Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/greg-abbott\/\">Greg Abbott<\/a>&rsquo;s (R-TX) Tuesday move to designate the group as a foreign terrorist organization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Doc.-1-Complaint.pdf\">lawsuit<\/a>, CAIR claimed that Abbott and Attorney General <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ken-paxton\/\">Ken Paxton<\/a> violated federal law by &ldquo;improperly&rdquo; designating the group a foreign terrorist organization and transnational criminal organization without due process. Says\">providing material support<\/a> to Hamas terrorists. The HLF defendants were convicted in that case. The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kslegislature.gov\/li_2012\/b2011_12\/committees\/misc\/ctte_s_jud_1_20120130_10_other.pdf?utm_\">FBI cut ties with CAIR<\/a> in 2009, citing these ties.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge in 2009 said that there was &ldquo;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investigativeproject.org\/documents\/case_docs\/1425.pdf\">ample evidence to establish the association<\/a>&rdquo; of CAIR with Hamas. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investigativeproject.org\/5088\/ipt-exclusive-witnesses-say-cair-hamas-mb-links?utm_\">Watchdog organizations<\/a> have also <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investigativeproject.org\/5088\/ipt-exclusive-witnesses-say-cair-hamas-mb-links?utm_\">shed light<\/a> on connections between CAIR leadership and terrorist groups. Shortly after Hamas&rsquo;s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack against Israel in which over 1,000 innocent people were murdered, tortured, raped, and kidnapped, CAIR&rsquo;s National Executive Director Nihad Awad said he was &ldquo;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/cair-executive-director-asks-if-irans-plan-to-assassinate-trump-is-actually-an-israeli-plot-to-ignite-another-war\/\">happy to see people breaking the siege<\/a>&rdquo; on the day of the attack, calling it an &ldquo;inspiration for people&rdquo; around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The United Arab Emirates designated CAIR as a terrorist organization in 2014 due to alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Critics have long called the group a &ldquo;successor organization&rdquo; to the group linked to and responsible for a number of terrorist attacks dating back to the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>CAIR rebuked Texas&rsquo;s designation, just as they rebuked the UAE&rsquo;s. They rejected the claim that the group is a successor organization of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/muslim-brotherhood\/\">Muslim Brotherhood.<\/a> CAIR says the two organizations have no ties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The organization additionally responded to the designation by claiming it stems from the governor&rsquo;s alleged bigotry toward <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/islam\/\">Islam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;CAIR has spent the last 31 years vocally speaking up against all forms of bigotry and unjust violence, hate crimes, and terrorism, CAIR wrote in its lawsuit. &ldquo;Governor Abbott&rsquo;s proclamation is defamatory and finds no basis in law or fact, and Plaintiffs therefore ask this Court to declare the Proclamation illegal, and enjoin its enforcement.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abbott claimed the group violated the Texas constitution by attempting to create a Sharia law compound in North Texas and coercing Muslim-owned businesses to follow the practices. The Texas constitution prohibits all forms of religious discrimination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Right<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/greg-abbott-designates-muslim-groups-as-terrorist-organizations\/\" title=\"Greg Abbott designates Muslim ...s as ...s\">-wing politicians widely criticize sharia law<\/a>, pointing to Middle Eastern counties where the system of practices is often blamed for discrimination against women and other religions, requirement of male guardianship, limited divorce and custody rights, unequal inheritance rights, low age of consent, cruel and unusual punishment, suppressed freedom of expression, and required genital mutilation surgeries for women.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing Texans should comply with is the &ldquo;Texas Constitution,&rdquo; which &ldquo;prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion &mdash; period,&rdquo; Abbott <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-designates-muslim-brotherhood-cair-as-foreign-terrorist-organizations\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have long made their goals clear: to forcibly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-lefts-continuous-revolution-and-the-worship-of-revolutionaries\/\" title=\"Embracing Change: The Left&#039;s Ongoing Revolution and Admiration for Revolutionaries\">impose sharia law<\/a> and establish <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/islam\/\">Islam&rsquo;s<\/a> &lsquo;mastership of the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The actions taken by the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR to support <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/terrorism\/\">terrorism<\/a> across the globe and subvert our laws through violence, intimidation, and harassment are unacceptable,&rdquo; the governor added.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3890787\/greg-abbott-designates-muslim-brotherhood-cair-terrorist-organizations-anti-sharia-push\/\">ABBOTT DESIGNATES MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD AND CAIR AS TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2809550\/hamas-linked-group-partners-with-cps-to-combat-islamophobia\/\">CAIR<\/a> alleged Paxton did not follow Article VI, Section 2, of the United States Constitution &mdash;
