Cherfilus-McCormick, who was first elected to the seat vacated by the late Rep. Alcee Hastings, &ldquo;conspired to steal that $5 million and routed it through multiple accounts to disguise its source&rdquo; along with her co-defendants.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;According to the indictment, Cherfilus-McCormick, 46, and her brother Edwin Cherfilus, 51, both of Miramar, worked through their family health-care company on a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract in 2021. We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While actual sentences are often significantly lower than the maximum, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/19\/sheila-cherfilus-mccormick-charged-fema-covid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> noted, the charges could carry over a half a century in prison if Cherfilus-McCormick is convicted.<\/p>\n<p>The representatives&rsquo; spokespeople were not available after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cnbc-host-awkward-moment-getting-called-letitia-james-indictment-hypocrisy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the indictment<\/a> was handed down, but her attorneys said that Cherfilus-McCormick &ldquo;is a committed public servant, who is dedicated to her constituents. We will fight to clear her good name.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The saga began in July of 2021 shortly after Hastings&rsquo; death. Cherfilus-McCormick, who&rsquo;d already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/story\/news\/politics\/government\/2020\/08\/06\/lawyer-makes-second-run-at-long-time-incumbent-hastings\/42180433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">run twice<\/a> against the incumbent in the primary &mdash; citing Hastings&rsquo; health challenges &mdash; allegedly began a scheme to fund her campaign through the overpayment of FEMA funds to her place of employ.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but her 2021 tax preparer also &ldquo;inflated charitable contributions in order to reduce her tax obligations,&rdquo; the indictment states. In December of 2023, she was referred to the House Committee on Ethics by the Office of Congressional Ethics for unreported payments and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/actblue-fined-for-facilitating-nearly-44000-in-illegal-contributions\/\" title=\"ActBlue Fined for Facilitating Nearly ,000 in Illegal Contributions\">excessive contributions<\/a>, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>In September of 2024, a separate OCE complaint alleged that her office may have made improper payments and that campaign contributions could be tied to her official actions. Then, in December of last year, the state of Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/mynbc15.com\/news\/connect-to-congress\/florida-accidentally-pays-company-5-million-ceo-may-have-used-money-to-run-for-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> the company to get back some of the overpaid money.<\/p>\n<p>Now, she faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/breaking-fbi-arrests-newsoms-ex-chief-staff-23-count-indictment-bank-wire-fraud-conspiracy-defraud-us-obstruction-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an indictment<\/a> &mdash; and, perhaps worse in the eyes of someone who allegedly stole $5 million to achieve her dream of making it to Congress, a credible challenger in the primary. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/2025\/09\/06\/congresswoman-cherfilus-mccormick-accuses-challenger-of-defamation-seeks-1-million-in-damages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Florida Sun-Sentinel<\/a>, progressive activist Elijah Manley has mounted a challenge from Cherfilus-McCormick&rsquo;s left, alleging (among other failures) that she &ldquo;took $5.7 million from taxpayers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>What was her response? In addition to a defamation lawsuit, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/story\/opinion\/columns\/2025\/10\/22\/florida-20th-congressional-race-your-mama-mccormick-manley\/86805660007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palm Beach Post<\/a>, she&rsquo;s also dismissed Manley by telling him (and I quote) &ldquo;your mama.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>My assumptions is that federal juries will be even less impressed with that defense than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gop-flips-2-house-seats-dems-south-florida-woes-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Florida<\/a> voters are. Best of luck, Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick, and your mama right back at you.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, as she prepares to possibly spend the next half-century behind bars, may I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/free-book-bible-gold-will-change-think-money-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Bible<\/a> as reading material instead of &ldquo;The Dozens?&rdquo; I think this passage from Ezekiel 34:2-4 is very appropriate:<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves!
