The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks to stop a lease sale scheduled for December 10 that would <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >cover 80 million acres<\/a>. This sale is the first of 30 planned under legislation enacted in July that mandates lease sales through 2040. The plaintiffs argue that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management failed to conduct adequate environmental and health impact assessments or to consider alternatives, as required by the National Environmental policy Act. They also warn that oil and gas operations pose meaningful risks to Gulf Coast residents, ecosystems, and endangered species like the Rice&#8217;s whale. The lawsuit cites the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster as a precedent for the potential harm. The requirements are part of the 50-year-old National Environmental Policy Act.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the suit says oil and gas operations would hurt millions of people who live along the Gulf Coast, as well as its ecosystems and the endangered Rice&rsquo;s whale.
