Beam, aged 66, was shot in the head on the college campus and died the following day. Irving was arrested shortly after the incident, found carrying the firearm used in the shooting, and admitted to the crime.The attack was described by police as targeted,tho the exact relationship between Irving and Beam remains unclear. Beam was highly respected in the community, featured in the Netflix docuseries &#8220;Last Chance U,&#8221; and remembered as a father figure who positively impacted many players who went on to professional careers. He&rsquo;d most recently been serving as the school&rsquo;s athletic director after retiring from coaching last year.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He really is the best of Oakland &mdash; was the best of Oakland,&rdquo; Jones Dickson said. &ldquo;His spirit is still here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The district attorney said Irving had no criminal record. He is being held without bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Alameda County Public Defender&rsquo;s Office said it has not been appointed to represent Irving and declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Officers <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/oakland-laney-college-shooting-66b864cc370c1f3c7dee206cf5b389e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrived at Laney College<\/a> before noon Thursday to find Beam shot in the head at the athletics field house. He was treated at a hospital, but died the following day from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Irving was arrested at a commuter rail station just after 3 a.m. Friday. He was carrying the firearm used to shoot Beam, and he admitted to carrying out the shooting, according to the probable cause document.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland Police Assistant Chief James Beere said the suspect went on campus for a &ldquo;specific reason&rdquo; but did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This was a very targeted incident,&rdquo; he said at a Friday news conference.<\/p>\n<p>Beere did not say how the two men knew each other, but said Irving was known to hang around the Laney campus.<\/p>\n<p>Irving&rsquo;s brother told the San Francisco Chronicle that Irving had lost his job as a security guard after an altercation and was facing eviction at home.<\/p>\n<p>Beam joined Laney College in 2004 as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/denver-broncos-honor-demaryius-thomas-line-up-with-10-players\/\" title=\"Denver Broncos Honor Demaryius Thomas, Line Up With 10 Players\">running backs coach<\/a> and became head coach in 2012, winning two league titles.
