Though, the board was deadlocked on whether to assess the fines and ultimately decided not to pursue an appeal, leaving the issue unresolved. board members noted uncertainty in how to interpret campaign finance law, particularly regarding the definition of an election cycle for reporting purposes. The Liberty Justice Center, which has intervened in the case, stated that if the board remains deadlocked, the courts should step in to clarify the law and determine if any violations occurred.

Elections board drops campaign finance fines against IL Senate President

(The Center Square) – The campaign finance violation against Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, is over after the Illinois State Board of Elections decided to not take up an appeal and dismiss the case.
