Jesús “Chuy” García of Illinois for what critics say was an undemocratic move to set up his chief of staff,Patty García,as his successor by announcing his retirement after the filing deadline for candidates. The resolution passed 236-183, wiht 23 Democrats joining Republicans in support, introduced by fellow Democrat Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington. Gluesenkamp Perez criticized García’s actions as undermining democratic elections, arguing it discourages voter engagement and accountability.

García had initially filed for reelection but later retired due to personal and family health reasons, including the care of adopted grandchildren after his daughter’s recent death. He defended his decision as a family choice and emphasized his continued commitment to fighting for progressive causes.

House Democratic leadership strongly opposed the resolution, defending García as a dedicated progressive and urging members to reject the measure. Despite efforts to block the resolution, it was passed, reflecting an unusual intraparty conflict and raising concerns about internal Democratic Party politics and election processes.

Twenty-three House Democrats vote to rebuke Chuy García over succession plan

The House rebuked Rep.
