Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) has called on President Donald Trump and Secretary of State marco Rubio to halt negotiations with Mexico due to the Mexican government’s alleged ties to drug cartels and communist regimes. Speaking ahead of the upcoming United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) discussions scheduled for 2026, Gimenez criticized Mexico’s leadership, particularly President Claudia Sheinbaum, accusing her governance of enabling narco-terrorism and corruption. He highlighted the significant rise in drug cartel-related violence in Mexico and expressed concern that continuing business as usual would allow Mexico to support transnational criminal and terrorist organizations, including Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles and Cuba’s communist regime.

Gimenez demanded that the Trump administration revisit the USMCA framework, urging Mexico to enhance anti-drug trafficking efforts, stop oil shipments to Cuba, and end the trafficking of Cuban medical professionals. Reflecting the Trump administration’s intensifying crackdown on drug trafficking, including military strikes on drug-smuggling vessels near Venezuela and increased naval presence, Trump indicated openness to conducting strikes in Mexican waters to combat drug operations. Rubio also expressed willingness to support Mexico with additional resources to strengthen the drug war. Gimenez’s position underscores skepticism toward Mexico’s government and calls for tougher policies to curb narco-terrorism before resuming trade talks.

House Republican demands Trump administration drop Mexico negotiations over narco-communist ties

Rep.
