Trump promised $10,000 bonuses for controllers who continued working without pay during the shutdown and threatened to dock pay for those who called out or complained, despite upcoming back pay. He emphasized a “carrot-and-stick” approach, rewarding those who stayed on duty and criticizing those who did not. Some Democratic lawmakers condemned Trump’s comments, arguing that controllers deserve support rather than attacks. The article highlights that Democrats were responsible for the shutdown by linking it to Obamacare subsidies and criticizes their focus on Trump’s tone rather than the shutdown’s cause. Trump reaffirmed his commitment to bonus payments during a Fox News interview, acknowledging he would find the funds despite budget constraints. The piece concludes by suggesting Democrats often oppose responsible consequences while supporting increased spending on other issues.

Here’s a novelty: the federal government being used to reward employees who did the right thing in a time of need.

That is, at least, the plan.
