The crash, wich occurred shortly after takeoff, resulted in at least 14 deaths, multiple business fires, and nine people still missing with little hope for survivors.Both <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >companies cited safety concerns<\/a> and a advice from Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, for the immediate grounding. The MD-11 model constitutes a small part of each company&#8217;s fleet-9% for UPS and 4% for FedEx-but contingency plans are in place to maintain delivery operations. Production of the MD-11 ended in 1998, and both companies have been phasing out the aircraft in favor of more fuel-efficient models. The last MD-11 was then finished in 2000 and delivered a year later.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, UPS <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/ups-begins-phaseout-of-older-md-11-cargo-jets#:~:text=UPS%20has:%20*%20**Retired%20six%20of%20its,*%20Better%20reliability%20*%20Fewer%20carbon%20emissions\">began<\/a> a phase-out of its own of the cargo plane as part of a plan to replace the MD-11 with more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/company-with-private-jet-trips-starting-at-102-the-uber-of-flying\/\" title=\"Fly like a VIP for just 2: Introducing the &#039;Uber of the skies\">fuel-efficient aircraft<\/a>.
