Out of 23 races in which openly socialist candidates ran, more than half resulted in wins, including major positions such as Zohran MamdaniS election as mayor of New York City. Other successful candidates include Robin Wonsley and Soren Stevenson in Minneapolis, Kelsea bond in Atlanta, and several others holding city council seats in cities like Detroit, Milwaukee, Cambridge, Greenbelt, Carrboro, Ithaca, and Poughkeepsie.

These candidates campaigned on progressive platforms advocating for policies like rent freezes, public childcare, fareless public transportation, racial and climate justice, community control of land and housing, immigrant rights, and police reform.

However, not all DSA-backed candidates succeeded. Several notable losses occurred, including socialist challengers in Minneapolis mayoral and park commissioner races, the Somerville mayoral race in Massachusetts, city council bids in Fort Collins,Tacoma, and Renton, and also other local races. Some contests remain undecided, with two socialists advancing to runoff elections for the Jersey City Council.

the article highlights a growing influence of democratic socialism in local American politics, marked by both notable electoral successes and setbacks.

Socialist candidates cruised to victory in a dozen races

America’s de facto socialist party docketed a dozen victories on Election Day this week, with self-declared socialists winning mayoral offices and city council seats in various off-year elections across the country.

Candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America won more than half of the 23 races they were running in as openly avowed socialists, suffering relatively few losses at the ballot box, while the remaining DSA-endorsed hopefuls head to runoff elections.

Recommended Stories

Stefanik seizes on newly elected NY Democrat hesitant to endorse Hochul: ‘Absolutely toxic’

Megyn Kelly tells GOP to ‘get its s*** together’ after 2025 wipeout

Johnson won’t commit to ‘backroom’ Senate deals on expiring Obamacare credits

Here are the winners, the washouts, and the contenders still in play.

Victors

So far, DSA has notched 12 triumphs, most notably the ascension of DSA darling Zohran Mamdani to mayor-elect of New York City.
