Kat Cammack&#8217;s (R-FL) proposed App Store Freedom Act, arguing that the bill would undermine children&#8217;s online safety. The bill,introduced in May,seeks to require major app store operators like Apple to allow users to set third-party apps or app stores as their default,aiming to promote competition and reduce the control dominant platforms have over customer data and in-app purchases. cammack argues that this would lower prices and increase innovation by breaking app store monopolies.<\/p>\n<p>However, Apple contends that the legislation would harm online child safety, erode privacy and security protections, and actually stifle competition. Apple supports ongoing child safety efforts in Congress and maintains that the bill mirrors the European Union&#8217;s Digital Markets Act, which they claim has been criticized for inhibiting innovation. The Chamber of Progress,a tech industry coalition,also opposes the bill,warning that it could enable bad actors by removing critically important safety features.<\/p>\n<p>Apple is currently facing antitrust lawsuits from the U.S. Department of Justice and several state attorneys general accusing it of monopolizing the app market via its App Store. The results are higher prices and limited selections for consumers and anti-competitive practices for developers that have stifled innovation,&rdquo; she added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rep. (AP Photo\/Mariam Zuhaib)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Apple opposes the bill, which it says kills competition and endangers children&rsquo;s online safety.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Apple is deeply committed to kids&rsquo; online safety, which is why we support efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >pass meaningful child safety legislation<\/a> in Congress and continue to create powerful tools to help parents protect their children online,&rdquo; an Apple spokesperson told the <em>Washington Examiner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The App Store Freedom Act would have the opposite impact, undermining kids&rsquo; online safety while also stifling competition and eroding privacy and security protections for consumers. Apple will continue to prioritize kids&rsquo; safety online, as well as advocate to protect American innovation and the best interests of users and developers who rely upon the App Store,&rdquo; they said.<\/p>\n<p>The company believes the bill is a &ldquo;copycat&rdquo; of the European Union&rsquo;s Digital Markets Act, which aims to make it easier for smaller companies to compete in the digital market. It&rsquo;s been criticized for stifling innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Chamber of Progress, a center-left tech industry policy coalition, also disagrees with Cammack&rsquo;s legislation. The group said the bill &ldquo;opens the door to bad actors.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It removes the safety features that make app store ecosystems safer and more accountable and opens the door to bad actors.
