Representative Alexandria Ocasio-cortez (AOC) emphasizes that Mamdani’s win signals a triumph for extremist, left-wing factions within the Democratic Party, warning that the party must align with this new direction or face irrelevance. Despite the GOP offering minimal opposition, Mamdani’s campaign highlighted a radical leftward shift focusing on identity politics and progressive policies such as defunding the police and aggressive social agendas. The article critiques this agenda as the same one that contributed to the Democrats’ losses in the 2024 presidential election. while establishment Democrats have traditionally maintained national electoral success, the emerging progressive faction wins locally but risks alienating key voter bases and donors. AOC’s remarks suggest an ongoing internal party struggle between the old guard and new revolutionaries, with the 2025 off-year elections potentially marking a pivotal turning point in the Democratic Party’s future trajectory.

    Read more…

Just in case you thought that Democrats were the big winner on Tuesday night, leave it to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to break reality to the party: The extremists won, and if the establishment doesn’t kowtow to them, it’s all for naught.

AOC was speaking about New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who beat former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a Democrat-on-Democrat matchup where the conservatives ended up backing Cuomo, if tepidly, because he wasn’t an undisguised radical.

Of all of the major off-year races, Mamdani’s roughly nine-point victory over Cuomo was the least impressive, but arguably the most disturbing. Not that anything good was going to come out of the NYC mayoral race — that train had long since left the station when the GOP declined not to field a candidate with more electability than activist, radio host, and local conservative gadfly Curtis Sliwa — but Mamdani’s six-month charge to the forefront of his party indicated a new leftward, identitarian tilt to a party that didn’t lack for a leftward tilt or a focus on identity politics before the election.

And AOC, appearing on CNN after Mamdani was declared the victor not long after the polls closed in New York, made it clear that her peeps better learn a lesson from this one.

Despite the fact that neither Mamdani nor Cuomo faced any real threat from Sliwa or any other self-declared conservative, Ocasio-Cortez said that the magic of the Mamdani campaign was that “[Mamdani] had to defeat a Republican and the old guard” of the party.

   console.log("A/B Test Video Player"); // Helper function to set a cookie function setVideoCookie(name, value, days) { var expires=""; if (days) { var date=new Date(); Check. Privilege-checks? Oh, you better believe that’s a check. Knee-jerk LGBT ideology? Check. Tax people who can leave the city to pay for his absurd agenda. Check that box, baby! If there were only still mask and vaccine mandates to impose, rest assured he’d do those, too.

Remember, this is exactly the agenda that caused virtually all goodwill former President Joe Biden’s administration and the Democratic Congress that followed it to evaporate by the end of 2021. By 2024, it was bad enough that Donald Trump not only won the electoral vote but the popular vote, as well.

The reason for the off-year victories is simple: In a slew of races and ballot measures spread mostly across blue states and a very blue city, Democrats treated it like a redo of the presidential election, and Republicans hardly cared. In retrospect, the party probably should have cared more than it did, since the size of the victories will give a party in disarray with serious financial and donor issues an uplift it shouldn’t have been handed, but the momentum — both in terms of fundraising and in terms of agenda — remains on the GOP side.

But here we have AOC saying that “the Democratic Party cannot last much longer by denying the future” — which is to say, her and Zohran Mamdani. Except the reason the “old guard” has hung on is precisely this: They cannot win nationally, and they will lose huge chunks of their base if they embrace anti-Semites, crypto-communists, and other forms of sundry radicals.

Say what you will about the gerontocracy, at least Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Dick Durbin, Jim Clyburn, and their ilk know how to win nationally. AOC and Zohran know how to win locally.

However, the Democrats are also the party of revolutionary social change — and like every party of revolution, a new group of revolutionaries eventually comes for you at some point. The 2025 off-year elections might well be that inflection point. It doesn’t matter how many points you win by in small battles like these if you lose the war in the same stroke.

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! AOC was referring to New York’s newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani, who defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a Democrat-versus-Democrat race where conservatives somewhat reluctantly supported Cuomo because he wasn’t an outright radical. Among major off-year contests, Mamdani’s roughly nine-point win over Cuomo was perhaps the least impressive but arguably most concerning. The NYC mayoral race had long been decided when Republicans chose not to run a more electable candidate than activist and conservative commentator Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s rapid rise within six months signaled a further shift leftward and toward identity politics in a party already leaning heavily in that direction before this election.

Appearing on CNN shortly after Mamdani’s victory was announced, AOC emphasized that her faction expects others in the party to take note. Despite no serious challenge from Sliwa or other conservatives, she said Mamdani “had to defeat a Republican and the old guard” of his own party.

“He fought battles on two fronts,” she explained. “This moment sends a message to those who only support party unity when it benefits them.” She added that Democrats must plan and fight for their future together or risk being left behind.

In essence, AOC declared victory for radicals over traditional Democrats and warned that ignoring this reality would doom the party. Her remarks likely dampened celebrations among Democratic elders since embracing this brand of “wokeness” contributed significantly to their 2024 losses-just repackaged here with one candidate in one city during an off-year election.

Mamdani’s campaign echoed themes from past social justice movements: defunding police, privilege checks, strong LGBT advocacy, taxing those able to leave NYC-all policies reminiscent of what eroded support for President Biden by 2021 and helped Donald Trump win both electoral and popular votes in 2024.

While these off-year wins mostly occurred in blue areas where Republicans showed little interest or effort-and thus gave Democrats some momentum-the broader national trend still favors GOP fundraising strength and agenda control.

AOC insists “the Democratic Party cannot survive much longer by denying its future,” meaning her wing alongside figures like Mamdani represents what lies ahead. However, established leaders remain wary because embracing radicals risks alienating key voters; they know how to win nationally while AOC knows how to win locally.

Ultimately though-as with all revolutionary parties-a new generation of insurgents eventually challenges existing leadership. The 2025 elections may mark such a turning point: small victories won by large margins mean little if they come at the cost of losing control over the bigger political battle ahead

[33651
8334,66515,3928,37324,4411
post-2506884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-aoc","tag-new-socialists","tag-pelosi","tag-political-conflict","tag-schumer
["GET
