Sununu, a former Republican senator from New Hampshire seeking to reclaim his Senate seat, has a complex record on Israel that could pose challenges in teh upcoming GOP primary. Of Arab-American descent, with Palestinian and Lebanese heritage, Sununu opposed several pro-Israel resolutions during his tenure as a congressman in the late 1990s and early 2000s. As a senator from 2003 to 2009, he was somewhat of an outlier in his party for advocating humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.

More recently,Sununu has avoided taking a definitive stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict, despite running in a Republican primary where strong pro-Israel support is typical. His past votes include opposing measures supporting jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel and opposing resolutions against Palestinian statehood declarations, which drew criticism from pro-Israel groups. nonetheless, he also supported defence spending bills aiding Israel and co-sponsored pro-Israel resolutions during his Senate term.

Sununu’s campaign emphasizes his support for former President Trump’s Middle East policies and Israel’s right to defend itself, but his ambiguous record may give his primary rival, former Senator Scott Brown-who has strong pro-Israel credentials-a political advantage. The National Republican Senatorial Commitee backs sununu, highlighting his alignment with Trump’s peace efforts, while Brown has criticized Sununu’s past positions as insufficiently supportive of Israel. This dispute underscores a broader debate within the GOP about Israel and Middle East policy as the Senate race in New Hampshire unfolds.

John E.
