And I demanded to know from Speaker Johnson what the Republican plan for healthcare is,&rdquo; she wrote in a statement on X, confirming reported accounts of her message on the call.<\/p>\n<p>Still, most Republican Senators had already left for the weekend by the time Trump made his demands on Thursday, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3870690\/thune-johnson-against-trump-demand-nix-senate-filibuster\/\">those remaining in D.C.<\/a> on Friday signaled to reporters they were not seriously considering the president&rsquo;s advice.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Wrasse, a spokesman for Sen. Majority Leader <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3870690\/thune-johnson-against-trump-demand-nix-senate-filibuster\/\">John Thune<\/a> (R-SD), said in a statement: &ldquo;Leader Thune&rsquo;s position on the importance of the legislative filibuster is unchanged.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Thune stated after winning his Senate leadership position that the filibuster rule would not be altered during his tenure as leader.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who has spent the past month blaming Democrats for the current shutdown, similarly told reporters the filibuster is &ldquo;a very important&rdquo; legislative &ldquo;safeguard.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If the shoe was on the other foot, I don&rsquo;t think our team would like it,&rdquo; he stated. &ldquo;What you&rsquo;re seeing is an expression of the president&rsquo;s anger at the situation. He is as angry as I am and the American people are about this madness, and he just desperately wants the government to be reopened.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>White House officials declined to respond to Republican lawmakers&rsquo; rejection of Trump&rsquo;s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate could abolish the filibuster with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blackburn-introduces-amendments-to-counter-china-and-iran\/\" title=\"Blackburn Introduces Am...ments to Counter China and Iran\">simple majority vote<\/a>, plus Vice President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3869757\/jd-vance-democrats-childlike-behavior-government-shutdown\/\">JD Vance<\/a> serving as the tiebreaker, meaning that the president could only stand to lose four Republican lawmakers and still successfully change the Senate rules.<\/p>\n<p>And beyond Republican leadership, a number of rank-and-file GOP Senators similarly voiced displeasure with the president&rsquo;s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/thom-tillis\/\">Thom Tillis<\/a> (R-NC), who has frequently clashed with the White House on legislative matters since January, will &ldquo;never vote to eliminate the legislative filibuster under any circumstance,&rdquo; a Tillis spokesperson <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/31\/filibuster-trump-republicans-shutdown-00631300\">told&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The filibuster forces us to find common ground in the Senate,&rdquo; Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) wrote in a statement on X. &ldquo;Power changes hands, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/thune-and-johnson-united-against-trump-demand-to-nix-senate-filibuster\/\" title=\"Thune and Johnson united against ... demand to nix ...\">principles shouldn&#038;rsquo<\/a>;t. I&rsquo;m a firm no on eliminating it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As expected, Democrats have warned against ending the Senate&rsquo;s filibuster rule as the shutdown extended across October, a position out of fashion with the caucus during much of President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\">Joe Biden<\/a>&lsquo;s term in office.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats unsuccessfully pushed the former president to back ending the Senate rule in order to pass his failed Build Back Better economic spending package, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-signs-executive-order-to-make-it-easier-to-vote-calls-gop-election-reform-efforts-an-all-out-assault-on-voting-rights\/\" title=\"Biden Signs Executive Order \u2018To Make It Easier\u2019 To Vote, Calls GOP Election Reform Efforts \u2018An All-Out Assault\u2019 On ...\">voting rights legislation<\/a>, and new federal abortion protections.<\/p>\n<p>During a 2021 town hall with CNN, Biden claimed that nuking the filibuster would &ldquo;throw the entire Congress into chaos, and nothing would get done.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following the Supreme Court&rsquo;s <em>Dobbs <\/em>decision in 2022, the president suggested an openness to temporarily altering the Senate&rsquo;s filibuster rule to codify abortion rights but ultimately conceded that Democrats lacked the votes in the chamber to do so.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I believe we have to codify<em>&nbsp;Roe v. Wade<\/em>&nbsp;into law. And the way to do that is to make sure Congress votes to do that,&rdquo; he stated at a press conference while in Madrid, Spain, for a NATO leaders summit. &ldquo;If the filibuster gets in the way, it&rsquo;s like voting rights, it should be &mdash; we provide an exception for this, should require an exception to the filibuster for this action, to deal with the<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3868464\/supreme-court-meaning-of-regular-forces-chicago-national-guard-case\/\">&nbsp;Supreme Court&nbsp;<\/a>decision.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>However, after Trump&rsquo;s victory in November of 2024, Democrats quickly began retreating from their Biden-era filibuster positions. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;d be lying if I said we&rsquo;d be in a better position without the filibuster,&rdquo; Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> at the time. &ldquo;We have a responsibility to stop autocratic and long-headed abuse of power or policy, and we&rsquo;ll use whatever tools we have available. We&rsquo;re not going to fight this battle with one hand tied behind our back.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You play with the rules that exist,&rdquo; added Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT).<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3869016\/snap-deadline-shutdown-pressure-trump-democrats\/\"><strong>LOOMING SNAP DEADLINE AMPUS UP SHUTDOWN PRESSURE ON BOTH TRUMP AND DEMOCRATS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) mocked the filibuster flip from Democrats earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We ran on that. We ran on killing the filibuster, and now we love it,&rdquo; he told reporters. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want to hear any Democrat clutching their pearls about the filibuster.
