The Justice Department requested the pause by filing a writ of mandamus to challenge U.S. district Judge Sara Ellis&#8217;s order, which demanded bovino report every weekday afternoon. The appeals court&#8217;s stay will remain while it reviews the Justice Department&#8217;s request. The original order arose from a lawsuit by activist groups alleging excessive force by federal immigration officers in Chicago amid protests. Judge Ellis has also mandated body cameras for federal officers and restricted certain riot control tactics during the case. A writ of mandamus is when a higher court issues an order to a lower court to correct an abuse of discretion or to compel a lower court judge to fulfill his or her official duty.<\/p>\n<p>The order comes in a lawsuit filed by activist groups alleging excessive use of force by federal immigration officers in their operations in the Chicago area. Ellis has grilled officials over their tactics amid unruly protests over their operations, including the use of tear gas, as protesters have allegedly tried to interfere with arrests of illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>During this case, Ellis has mandated federal immigration officers in Chicago wear&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3853302\/judge-ice-officers-body-cams-chicago\/\">body cameras<\/a>&nbsp;and has <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >issued multiple temporary restraining orders aimed<\/a> at restricting the use of certain riot control tactics.
