The Republican Party aims to build on a recent political shift toward conservatism in the state, partly influenced by support for former President Donald Trump, while Democrats strive to maintain their narrow majorities and political influence.

In the gubernatorial race, Democrat Abigail Spanberger faces Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Spanberger, a former CIA officer and U.S.congresswoman, leads the race despite some controversy around her endorsement of Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones. Earle-Sears, a Jamaican immigrant and Marine veteran, emphasizes conservative social policies but has struggled to secure a full endorsement from Trump.

the attorney general contest features incumbent Republican Jason Miyares against Democrat Jay Jones. Jones’ campaign has been hindered by backlash over violent text messages he sent in 2022, leading to a costly ad campaign by Miyares. Polls show a close race, with Miyares narrowly ahead in voter favorability.

For lieutenant governor, Republican John Reid is challenging Democratic state senator ghazala Hashmi. Reid, the first openly gay statewide candidate in Virginia, promotes business-friendly and conservative views, seeking bipartisan support. Hashmi focuses on education, healthcare, and criticism of the Trump governance’s policies.

All 100 House of Delegates seats are also up for election, with several competitive races as Democrats try to defend their slim 51-49 majority. Major campaign spending is underway, with many voters concerned about rising energy costs linked to data center growth in the state.

the 2025 Virginia elections are seen as a critical battleground with important implications for the state’s political future.

Key people to watch in looming 2025 Virginia elections

Virginia residents are casting ballots in a handful of days for myriad closely watched races from the governor’s office to the House of Delegates, as Republicans and Democrats battle to tilt the balance of power in the state.

The GOP hopes to capitalize on a political trend toward red in the Old Dominion that they believe was sparked by a shift toward President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
