Historically, Virginia voters tend to elect governors from the party not holding the presidency.

Key issues shaping the election include a recent scandal involving Democratic attorney general candidate jay Jones, who apologized after violent text messages from 2022 surfaced, sparking republican condemnation and heavy ad campaigns against him. Economic concerns also dominate voters’ minds, especially fears about a federal government shutdown impacting the large federal workforce in Virginia, which could lead to job losses and rising unemployment.

Redistricting is another contentious topic, wiht Virginia Democrats pushing to fast-track congressional redistricting plans opposed by GOP candidate Lt. Earle-Sears strongly opposes allowing transgender girls to participate in girls’ sports or use girls’ bathrooms, while Spanberger advocates for local decision-making and seeks to avoid direct confrontation on the topic.

the Virginia election reflects meaningful political and cultural divisions, with economic uncertainty, government policies, and social issues all pivotal to voter decisions.

What to know about the issues dominating the Virginia election

Virginia is one of two states, the other being New Jersey, that have marquee gubernatorial races this November and will give some insight into how voters are evaluating President Donald Trump‘s second administration.

The commonwealth’s off-year elections have been widely seen as a bellwether for the following year’s midterm elections.

Recommended Stories

Federal employees, public school teachers, and government officials donated to Jay Jones after text scandal

RNC to tie Mamdani to every toss-up race in 2026 midterm elections: ‘Kiss of death’

Spanberger leads Earle-Sears by over $2 million in fundraising ahead of Election Day

Democrats, led by gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger, are hoping to flip all three statewide races after Republicans surged back into power in 2021, led by Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA).
