(and open socialist) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-aoc-bernie-sanders-flip-cnns-kaitlan-collins-chuck-schumer-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it was Schumer&rsquo;s fear of a primary challenge from the left &mdash; mainly in the form of Ocasio-Cortez &mdash; that spurred him to engage in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chuck-schumer-comes-fire-admitting-treating-shutdown-like-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loser of a shutdown<\/a> in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>In short, Democrats can&rsquo;t rally their base of increasingly leftist voters while attracting support from independents.<\/p>\n<p>They can&rsquo;t try to attract support from independents without infuriating their base. (That&rsquo;s the lesson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/schumer-turns-shutdown-fix-idea-fellow-democrats-erupt-open-mutiny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schumer has learned<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>All of this is going to figure in next year&rsquo;s midterm elections, of course. It could also play a major role in next week&rsquo;s gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia.
