Senate Republicans face three critical votes aimed at overturning Trump’s national emergency declarations that enabled tariffs on Canada, Brazil, and a 10% global baseline tariff on U.S. trading partners. These votes, supported by some Republicans alongside Democrats, seek to end these tariffs but are largely symbolic because House rules prevent forced votes on tariffs there. The Supreme Court is also reviewing the legality of Trump’s global tariffs following a lower court decision striking them down. Some Republicans, including Senator Lisa Murkowski, have sided with Democrats in challenging the tariffs’ legality, arguing only Congress has authority to impose such taxes. The article also notes recent tensions with Canada after Trump increased tariffs following a controversial anti-tariff ad. The Brazil tariffs, currently at 50%, face opposition related to political issues involving ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. Senate discussions and votes are expected soon, highlighting divisions within the GOP on trade and tariff policy.

Senate Democrats reignite GOP tariff fight as Supreme Court weighs legality

Senate Republicans are set to face their latest unity test this week on President Donald Trump’s tariffs and import taxes, which have created heartburn for GOP lawmakers since the White House imposed them earlier this year.

The GOP-controlled chamber will hold three separate votes later this week, forced by Democrats and backed by a handful of Republicans, to terminate the national emergency declarations Trump has used to place tariffs against Canada and Brazil, as well as a 10% global baseline he has set for United States trading partners.

Recommended Stories

Four key funding cliffs near as government shutdown continues with no deal in sight

Lindsey Graham suggests House Democrats ‘see what they are doing’ to US during shutdown

Bernie Sanders blasts establishment candidates, backs AOC for 2028

Vice President JD Vance will attend the Senate Republicans’ weekly lunch meeting on Tuesday to discuss the tariff votes, which could come as early as Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The votes only require simple majorities to pass and are likely to present the latest rebuke of the president’s tariff policies by members of his own party, as Republicans have traditionally upheld principles of free trade. A vote to roll back the global tariffs failed later that same month because of absences from two supporters of the resolution: McConnell and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

Trump recently halted trade talks with Canada and hiked their tariff rate by an additional 10%, on top of their 35% rate, over an anti-tariff ad from Ontario officials using soundbites from former President Ronald Reagan. The tariff was apparently imposed due to the country’s prosecution of Trump ally and former President Jair Bolsonaro, though hopes of a trade deal to reduce the duties were revived this week following a meeting between Trump and Brazil’s leader.

David Sivak contributed to this report.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/071525_PITTSBURGH_ENERGY_SUMMIT_TRUMP-4.webp?w=696
[33651,538
6203,33741,3740,32275,50406
post-2503723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","category-washington-examiner","tag-gop","tag-legality","tag-senate","tag-supreme-court","tag-tariffs-2
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/071525_PITTSBURGH_ENERGY_SUMMIT_TRUMP-4.webp?w=696
["GET
