Speaking on Fox News, Graham emphasized that the shutdown is harmful to both the country and the Democrats themselves, especially given current global dangers. He suggested that resolving healthcare issues, including debates over extending enhanced Obamacare tax credits, should be done with the government remaining open through bipartisan discussions. Graham also proposed that members of Congress should forfeit their pay during shutdowns to create an incentive to avoid them,although this would require a constitutional amendment. As of Monday, 11 votes have proven unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), seek to extend enhanced <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/obamacare\/\">Obamacare<\/a> tax credits that expire at the end of the year. Two senators have broken ranks and voted with Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >premium tax credits initially drafted<\/a> under the Affordable Care Act were enhanced under the Biden administration amid the COVID-19 pandemic. A Congressional Budget Office report said that permanently extending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-gop-weighs-whether-to-save-obamacare-tax-credits-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"House GOP weighs whether to save Obamacare tax credits - Washington Examiner\">enhanced credits<\/a> would <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3480412\/house-gop-weighs-save-obamacare-tax-credits\/\">cost the government $383 billion<\/a>. However, if they permanently expire, the number of citizens without health insurance would rise by an average of 3.8 million annually by 2034.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope there is a breakaway, there&rsquo;s a group of senators on the Democratic side who will see this is hurting them, hurting the country,&rdquo; Graham added.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3863496\/shutdown-fight-deepens-thune-chilly-relationship-schumer\/\"><strong>THUNE&rsquo;S CHILLY RELATIONSHIP WITH SCHUMER IN DEEP FREEZE THANKS TO SHUTDOWN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Graham went on to suggest that members of Congress &ldquo;forfeit our pay&rdquo; during government shutdowns. Representatives and senators are promised their salaries even during government shutdowns per the Constitution.
