But his report also noted that Bair makes about $14 million a year at Fox and 2023 extended his contract with the network to 2028, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/bari-weiss-eyes-fox-news-star-bret-baier-to-anchor-cbs-evening-news-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mediaite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Baier currently hosts Fox&rsquo;s &ldquo;Special Report with Bret Baier,&rdquo; the fifth most<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hannity-breaks-record-for-longest-running-primetime-cable-host-passing-larry-king\/\" title=\"Hannity Breaks Record for Longest-Running Primetime Cable Host, Passing Larry King\">-watched cable news program<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/1219169\/msnbc-cnn-fox-news-top-shows-ratings-newsnation-newsmax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV Insider<\/a>, an outlet that covers the television industry. (The four programs ahead of &ldquo;Special Report&rdquo; are all Fox News offerings.)<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;CBS Evening News&rdquo; is last among the Big Three legacy network news programs, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/1216169\/nbc-abc-cbs-evening-news-ratings-september-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Baier, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/person\/b\/bret-baier#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined Fox<\/a> in 1998, is a reliable commodity at the network with a reputation for bringing a newsman&rsquo;s sensibility to coverage that is a far cry from the reputation CBS News has built for itself as a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >liberal-leaning legacy outfit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In last year&rsquo;s presidential campaign, for instance, Baier&rsquo;s interview with Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris made news because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bret-baier-4-kamala-harris-staffers-frantically-waving-hands-forced-dismount-end-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baier&rsquo;s pressing questions<\/a> and one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bret-baier-says-made-mistake-interview-kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misplaced video feed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The coverage by CBS News, on the other hand, is probably best remembered for a decision by its flagship program &ldquo;60 Minutes&rdquo; to present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cbs-embroiled-huge-journalistic-scandal-major-change-kamala-harris-60-minutes-answer-spotted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two different versions<\/a> of a Harris response to a question about the Middle East, apparently in an effort to make Harris look better.<\/p>\n<p>Baier, and his contrasting approach to the job, would represent a huge shakeup for the network where, in 2004, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disgraced-anchor-returns-cbs-18-years-bitter-exit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">then-anchor Dan Rather<\/a> tried to destroy then-President George W. Bush&rsquo;s re-election campaign with forged National Guard records.<\/p>\n<p>But Weiss&rsquo; approach to the CBS job was already infuriating liberals in the media and media observers.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, for instance, called Weiss&rsquo; appointment a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/man-arrested-after-plowing-car-into-christmas-market-in-germany-killing-two-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Man arrested after plowing car into Christmas market in Germany, killing two - Washington Examiner\">dark day&#038;rdquo<\/a>; in the history of CBS News, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/tv\/news\/former-cbs-news-anchor-dan-rather-says-network-hiring-bari-weiss-is-a-dark-day-at-the-channel\/ar-AA1OdULE?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> reported. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/tv\/news\/former-cbs-news-anchor-dan-rather-says-network-hiring-bari-weiss-is-a-dark-day-at-the-channel\/ar-AA1OdULE?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Other critics included<\/a> MSNBC host Chris Hayes, who compared Weiss to Vice President J.D. Vance (an insult in liberal circles).<\/p>\n<p>A former writer and editor in The New York Times opinion section, Weiss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/14\/business\/media\/bari-weiss-resignation-new-york-times.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left the Gray Lady<\/a> in 2020, declaring that it had a &ldquo;hostile work environment&rdquo; fpr employees who did not embrace extreme leftist views.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the newspaper, Weiss founded the opinion\/news website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paramount, the parent corporation of CBS, purchased The Free Press in a deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced Oct. 6<\/a>.
