The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/save\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE database<\/a> allows local, state, and federal government agencies to verify an individual&rsquo;s immigration status. The Trump administration granted states free and direct access to the database, according to Nelson. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1302892462\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;The Trump Administration&rsquo;s decision to give states free and direct access to this data set for the first time has been a game changer, and we appreciate the partnership with the federal government to verify the citizenship of those on our voter rolls and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/data-more-than-200000-people-on-north-carolina-voter-rolls-missing-id-numbers\/\" title=\"Over 200,000 North Carolina ... IDs Missing\">maintain accurate voter lists<\/a>,&rdquo; Nelson said.  <\/p>\n<p>Nelson&rsquo;s office said the potential noncitizens&rsquo; names were sent to Texas counties for further investigation into their eligibility. Any individual who is determined to be a noncitizen will then be referred to the Office of Attorney General, Nelson&rsquo;s office said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Only eligible United States citizens may participate in our elections,&rdquo; Nelson said.<\/p>\n<p>Any voter who is identified as a potential non-citizen is given the opportunity to present proof of citizenship within 30 days. Voters that cannot provide proof of citizenship will have their registration canceled, though individuals can have their registration reinstated should they provide proof of citizenship at a later point. <\/p>\n<p>None of this runaround would be necessary, however, if Democrats would vote to pass the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/22\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">require<\/a> documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote. While noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal, the only thing standing between a noncitizen getting on the voter rolls and our free and fair elections is a small square box on the federal voter registration form requiring prospective voters attest under penalty of perjury they are a citizen. In other words, it&rsquo;s the honor system. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/09\/5-common-lies-about-the-save-act-and-how-to-refute-them\/\">5 Common Lies About The SAVE Act &mdash; And How To Refute Them<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/09\/5-common-lies-about-the-save-act-and-how-to-refute-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE Act<\/a> would require voters provide documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/13\/judge-blocks-trump-election-integrity-eo-after-yet-another-alleged-case-of-noncitizen-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proof of citizenship<\/a> to register by amending the 1993 National Voter Registration Act.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, several noncitizens have made their way onto voter rolls &mdash; and even voted &mdash; as a result of the insecure system. <\/p>\n<p>Forty-one noncitizens cast a ballot in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigrant-voting-noncitizens-elections-explained-cf4c73b336147b5f5d9c2a22b2564994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina<\/a>&nbsp;in 2016. In 2019,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2019\/jan\/30\/pennsylvania-11000-non-citizens-registered-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11,198 noncitizens<\/a>&nbsp;were removed from Pennsylvania&rsquo;s voter rolls, according to the Washington Times. During the 2024 election cycle, a Chinese college student&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/30\/a-noncitizen-cast-an-illegal-vote-in-michigan-and-officials-are-counting-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cast an illegal vote<\/a>&nbsp;despite being a noncitizen. (His vote was ultimately counted since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-ARTICLE-II-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ballots<\/a>&nbsp;are secret; once a vote is cast and tabulated, it is impossible to determine&nbsp;<em>who<\/em>&nbsp;cast the ballot.)<\/p>\n<p>A Georgia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/24\/georgia-audit-finds-nine-noncitizens-voted-in-past-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">audit<\/a>&nbsp;found 20 noncitizens registered to vote &mdash; nearly half of which cast ballots in past elections,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/politics\/election-audit-shows-20-noncitizens-registered-to-vote-in-georgia\/NRORAL7Z3RDSNMQ3QDLVEARPSY\/\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
