This collaboration has extended to state chapters, like New Jersey&#8217;s, and includes promoting lessons sympathetic to Palestinian narratives while being critical of Israel, sparking controversy due to perceived support for violence and biased portrayals of past events.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the materials target even young children, teaching topics such as racial justice, climate change, and feminism.The NEA&#8217;s association with these groups has drawn criticism, especially after distributing a pro-Palestinian map that erased israel and downplayed the Holocaust, leading to the union issuing an apology. The nearly three-million-strong National Education Association has gone to great lengths to endorse and embed such materials in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/teachers-unions-nightmare-study-shows-charter-schools-more-cost-effective-than-district-schools\/\" title=\"...\u2019 ...s Nightmare: Study Shows Charter Schools More Cost-Effective Than District Schools\">public education system<\/a> through a series of partnerships with the duo of left-wing organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NEA, the nation&rsquo;s largest teachers union, has granted the Zinn Education Project and Rethinking Schools <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DL-ufWCRnVo\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prime space<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkingschools.org\/2025\/01\/10\/njea-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opportunities to present<\/a> at its conferences, partnered with them to <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkingschools.org\/2025\/01\/10\/njea-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design curriculums<\/a>, united with the organizations to hold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/across-nation-teachers-rally-defend-truth-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national teaching events<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/teaching-anti-racist-lens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praised<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/resource-library\/resources-protect-freedom-read-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promoted<\/a> lessons developed by the groups in press releases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-07\/ALL%20IN_%20NEA%20ELL_AdvocacyGuide2015_v7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cited<\/a> them in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-07\/ALL%20IN_%20NEA%20ELL_AdvocacyGuide2015_v7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/Culture-of-Collaboration-Guidebook-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teachers handbooks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/crsj_nea_2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facilitated<\/a> the dissemination of lesson plans they developed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommended-stories\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3857626\/who-is-antifa-leader\/\">Who is antifa&rsquo;s leader?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/3855899\/zizian-cult-case-what-you-need-to-know-least-reported-story\/\">&lsquo;Zizian&rsquo; cult case: What you need to know about the wildest, least reported story of the year<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3854945\/dei-south-carolina-city-planning-major-cities\/\">DEI woven into plans for major South Carolina cities draws scrutiny from state leaders and DOJ<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Materials published by Rethinking Schools and the Zinn Education Project are replete with praise of violent organizations, riots, and other illegal activity oriented toward left-wing political goals.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1ScqAq1a7X6l6YeNo_u2hUknoR0LfCEjn\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classroom roleplay activity<\/a> developed by the Zinn Education Project, for example, intends to push back against assertions that the Black Panther Party was a violent organization by tasking students with pretending to be various individuals linked to the party &mdash; including some who were implicated in violent attacks on law enforcement. Among these were communist activist Angela Davis, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1972\/04\/18\/archives\/a-shotgun-that-miss-davis-purchased-is-linked-to-the-fatal-shooting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">purchased firearms<\/a> used by a fellow activist to murder a judge; Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver, who organized an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110723044742\/http:\/\/colemantruth.net\/kate1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">armed ambush<\/a> of Oakland police officers and fled to Cuba to avoid prosecution on attempted murder charges; and Assata Shakur, a left-wing activist who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3827329\/assata-shakur-tupac-aunt-police-killing-fugitive-dies-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convicted of murdering a New Jersey state trooper<\/a> in 1977.<\/p>\n<p>The descriptions of these individuals in the classroom materials often downplay or even justify their violent actions. In the case of Shakur, for instance, the lesson described her trial as a &ldquo;legal lynching&rdquo; and stated that her jury could not have been impartial because it was made up of white people. Davis, meanwhile, is described as a &ldquo;freedom fighter against racism, sexism, homophobia, and capitalism,&rdquo; and Cleaver, who ran for president in 1968, as an &ldquo;anti-war, anti-racist alternative to the Democratic Party.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Rethinking Schools&rsquo; text justifies much of the Black Panther Party&rsquo;s mission, despite its members&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/vault.fbi.gov\/Black%20Panther%20Party%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open calls for violent revolution <\/a>against the United States and their many armed, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/21\/black-panthers-murderous-thugs-dont-deserve-public-accolades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occasionally deadly<\/a>, confrontations with law enforcement and rival activists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NEA has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22Zinn%22+site:nea.org&amp;lr=&amp;sca_esv=602bc0460517bd79&amp;as_qdr=all&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifNVnL24Epac5Ua35emJ1u4xbf6SoQ:1760884386413&amp;ei=ovb0aN7qGJHl5NoPg5Dw-Ac&amp;start=0&amp;sa=N&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjew97CvbCQAxWRMlkFHQMIHH84ChDy0wN6BAgQEAQ&amp;biw=958&amp;bih=954&amp;dpr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/professional-excellence\/conferences-events\/annual-meeting-and-representative-assembly\/about-ra\/ra-news\/aspiring-educators-unite-better-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">number<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/resource-library\/black-lives-matter-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press releases<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/professional-excellence\/conferences-events\/annual-meeting-and-representative-assembly\/about-ra\/ra-news\/aspiring-educators-unite-better-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog posts<\/a> praising or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/professional-excellence\/student-engagement\/tools-tips\/unity-racial-justice-and-labor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promoting<\/a> the Zinn Education Project&rsquo;s classroom materials, stating that the organization &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/teaching-anti-racist-lens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promotes and supports teaching history accurately<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">National Education Association President Becky Pringle&nbsp;testifies during a House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on gun violence on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 8, 2022. (AP Photo\/Andrew Harnik, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Racial violence wasn&rsquo;t the only kind of political violence that received praise in materials published by Rethinking Schools and its affiliates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/10z7rtvHvX6t2NyDYdRLrq_RU7QZX6V87\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teaching the Fight for Queer Liberation<\/a>,&rdquo; for example, tasks students with roleplaying as individuals involved in various historical stages of the gay rights movement, often casting them in opposition to the &ldquo;Religious Right.&rdquo; The document containing the lesson plan speaks highly of the Stonewall Riots, a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Stonewall-riots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">violent confrontations<\/a> between police officers and members of the LGBT community in 1969.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1j9RyN9cRIKXrB-XltsE6zivx6nbLjFYU\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crimes targeting critical energy infrastructure<\/a> are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/standing-with-standing-rock-nodapl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praised<\/a> in Zinn Education Project materials as a valid form of protest.<\/p>\n<p>The NEA&rsquo;s relationship with the Zinn Education Project and Rethinking Schools goes beyond simple mentions in blog posts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In New Jersey, for instance, the duo of organizations is <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkingschools.org\/2025\/01\/10\/njea-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partnering<\/a> with the state&rsquo;s NEA chapter to develop curriculum and provide training for teachers. Nationwide, the NEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/across-nation-teachers-rally-defend-truth-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regularly partners <\/a>with the Zinn Education Project to hold teach-ins and invites both organizations to table at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DLi_1kSRqIM\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national conference<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Zinn Education Project and Rethinking Schools have also waded into the recent controversies surrounding the conflict between Israel and Hamas, often hostile to the former and, at times, amicable toward the latter.<\/p>\n<p>One such lesson, titled &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/12pA5EjzrC4XD8ehoWhgzJVHenkxFLW9w\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whose &lsquo;Terrorism?&rsquo;<\/a>&rdquo; encourages students to equate various actions taken by the Israeli and American governments to the 9\/11 terrorist attacks. Another resource from Rethinking Schools, <em>Teaching Palestine<\/em>, is a collection of lessons compiled to provide what it calls a &ldquo;full-throated defense of Palestinian humanity centering Palestinian lives, uplifting and celebrating Palestinians&rsquo; struggle for justice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In one <a href=\"https:\/\/45557309.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/45557309\/NAVI%20Resources\/Backgrounder:%20Rethinking%20Schools%E2%80%99%20Teaching%20Palestine.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">section of the book<\/a>, following materials accusing Israel of being an apartheid state, the lesson&rsquo;s author touts that his materials helped one student &ldquo;understand the frustrations that led to Oct. 7.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[T]he U.S. helped Israel ruin so many lives and helped kill countless children and civilians,&rdquo; reads another quote from a student intended to showcase the efficacy of the lesson. &rdquo;People need to understand this as the buildup to Oct. 7.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The lesson in question was written by Adam Sanchez, an educator based in Philadelphia who also serves as Rethinking Schools&rsquo; managing editor. Sanchez is <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkingschools.org\/articles\/defenders-of-israel-attempt-to-silence-anti-racist-educators-in-philadelphia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">linked<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3826546\/teachers-smuggle-pro-palestinian-lessons-despite-official-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Racial Justice Organizing Committee<\/a>, a group operating out of the School District of Philadelphia, having multiple acquaintances who help lead the group. Numerous &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3838512\/philadelphia-public-school-teachers-rally-celebrate-hamas-rage-resistance-oct-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">core members<\/a>&rdquo; of the RJOC &mdash; among them Philadelphia teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/?_keywords=Palazzolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Palazzolo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/?_keywords=Gann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hannah Gann<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/?_keywords=Ridgeway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keziah Ridgeway<\/a> &mdash; have authored lessons for Rethinking Schools.<\/p>\n<p>The RJOC attracted controversy on Oct. 7 when it helped plan and promote a rally intended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3838512\/philadelphia-public-school-teachers-rally-celebrate-hamas-rage-resistance-oct-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebrate<\/a> the anniversary of Hamas&rsquo;s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;October 7 marks two years since Palestinian resistance fighters bravely broke out of the prison that the Zionist regime has turned Gaza into,&rdquo; a post promoting the demonstration on the RJOC&rsquo;s Instagram account says. &ldquo;Now more than ever, we must reject all normalization with the Zionist regime, uplift indigenous Palestinian resistance, and honor the martyrs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kim Anderson, the executive director of the National Education Association (NEA), speaks during a demonstration at the headquarters of the Department of Education, Friday, March 14, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo\/Mark Schiefelbein)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hundreds of copies of lesson books published by Rethinking Schools, specifically their texts on <a href=\"https:\/\/rethinkingschools.org\/2025\/01\/10\/njea-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black activism and transgenderism<\/a>, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/crsj_nea_2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">distributed <\/a>to NEA members this year alone. Additionally, Rethinking Schools was granted a table at the NEA&rsquo;s 2025 Conference for Social and Racial Justice, where they distributed their books and shared excerpts, specifically from <em>Teaching Palestine<\/em>. Many of the lessons hosted on the Zinn Education Project&rsquo;s website are also present in Rethinking Schools&rsquo; educational materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NEA&rsquo;s approach to the issue of Israel and Hamas recently landed it in hot water after it sent its nearly 3 million members an email linking to pro-Palestinian materials that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/10\/us-news\/nea-sends-3m-members-disturbing-map-that-completely-erases-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defended<\/a> the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, erased Israel from a world map, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/teacher-union-sends-map-erasing-israel-its-millions-members-indigenous-peoples-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">downplayed<\/a> Adolf Hitler&rsquo;s genocide of the Jewish people.
