Though, left-leaning groups like the League of Women Voters oppose thes changes, arguing that requiring proof creates unneeded barriers for eligible voters. Critics also claim current laws already prohibit noncitizens from voting, though enforcement is weak, and cases of illegal votes have occurred. The petition coincides with stalled legislative efforts, such as the SAVE Act, and legal challenges to President Trump&#8217;s executive order on election integrity. Advocates emphasize the importance of enforcing federal law to protect voting rights exclusively for American citizens. the EAC&#8217;s public comment period on this petition is closing soon, encouraging citizens to voice their opinions through the federal rulemaking portal.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>More than eight in 10 Americans support policies that would require documented proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in U.S. elections, according to a<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/652523\/americans-endorse-early-voting-voter-verification.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Gallup poll <\/a>conducted just two weeks before the 2024 presidential election. But a well-funded campaign by leftist &ldquo;voter rights&rdquo; groups is lobbying hard to mute the voices of the 83 percent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Election Assistance Commission&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/document\/EAC-2025-0236-0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comment period<\/a> on a <a href=\"https:\/\/aflegal.org\/press-release\/america-first-legal-files-petition-to-require-proof-of-citizenship-to-register-to-vote-in-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petition<\/a> asking the agency to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote is in its final hours. Comments are due by the end of Monday. Visit the federal rulemaking portal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/document\/EAC-2025-0236-0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> to comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Stacking the Deck&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>In July, America First Legal Foundation submitted a petition asking the EAC to amend the federal voter registration form to require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. The <a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?path=\/prelim@title52\/subtitle2\/chapter205&amp;edition=prelim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Voter Registration Act <\/a>requires states to &ldquo;accept and use the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >mail voter registration form prescribed<\/a> . . . for the registration of voters in elections for Federal office.&rdquo; The commission is empowered to &ldquo;require . . . information . . . necessary to enable the appropriate State election official to assess the eligibility of the applicant and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/emails-biden-backing-billionaire-michael-bloomberg-tried-to-meddle-in-pennsylvanias-election\/\" title=\"Emails: Biden-Backing Billionaire Michael Bloomberg Tried To Meddle In Pennsylvania\u2019s Election\">administer voter registration<\/a> and other parts of the election process.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But leftist organizations like the League of Women Voters are rallying their troops to oppose the requested changes. Sources tracking comments in recent weeks tell The Federalist that liberal groups have ginned up a flood of comments opposed to the petition, some coming from dozens of foreign countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Urge the EAC not to require documentary proof of citizenship,&rdquo; the League&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lwv.org\/take-action\/urge-eac-not-require-documentary-proof-citizenship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a> begs. Like its election integrity denier compatriots, the League hyperbolically insists that requiring proof of citizenship to vote &ldquo;creates unnecessary barriers for many eligible voters.&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/09\/5-common-lies-about-the-save-act-and-how-to-refute-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It doesn&rsquo;t.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Loopholes and an Honor System&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>And the &ldquo;nonpartisan&rdquo; League leans on the left&rsquo;s usual faulty talking point, asserting that &ldquo;it&rsquo;s already illegal for noncitizens to vote.&rdquo; The current form is nothing more than an honor system, asking registrants to attest that they are a &ldquo;citizen of the United States of America.&rdquo; Few get caught because enforcement isn&rsquo;t a priority. Even when they do, it&rsquo;s impossible to track the illegal vote &mdash; as was the case when a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/01\/how-a-democrat-donor-led-voting-group-allegedly-pushed-a-chinese-national-to-cast-his-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foreign national from China <\/a>allegedly voted illegally at the University of Michigan in last year&rsquo;s presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>As America First Legal noted in the petition, <a href=\"https:\/\/publicinterestlegal.org\/foreign-nationals-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noncitizens voting in U.S. elections <\/a>is not a hypothetical issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;America First Legal will not stand by while our elections are undermined by loopholes and an &lsquo;honor system&rsquo; that invites fraud. The right to vote is the sacred privilege of American citizens &mdash; period,&rdquo; the petition asserts. &ldquo;We are demanding that the EAC fulfill its duty to the American people by requiring real, documentary proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. Anything less is an open invitation for illegal voting and a betrayal of our democracy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;What It All Boils Down To&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>The petition to the EAC comes as the House-passed <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/15\/election-integrity-activists-hit-the-road-to-save-the-save-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE Act, <\/a>which also requires documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, has been stymied by Democrats in the Senate. Meanwhile, rogue federal judges have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/06\/13\/donald-trump-elections-executive-order-ruling-00405109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocked<\/a> President Donald Trump&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/preserving-and-protecting-the-integrity-of-american-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order <\/a>on election integrity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/constitution\/articleii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Article 2, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution <\/a>gives the president the power to enforce federal law, and that is exactly what he&rsquo;s doing,&rdquo; Garland Favorito, co-founder of Voters Organized for Trusted Election Results in Georgia <a href=\"https:\/\/voterga.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(VoterGA<\/a>), told The Federalist in an interview.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Favorito said he believes the president will ultimately prevail at the U.S. Supreme Court, which has recognized that the executive branch still has powers under the Constitution even if the left doesn&rsquo;t like the guy duly elected to lead it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s common sense to do what&rsquo;s necessary to ensure compliance with federal law. That, to me, is what it all boils down to,&rdquo; Favorito said.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of Americans agree, but the clock is ticking for them to add their voices to the election-integrity effort.
