Vance has held onto a narrow lead over Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a new hypothetical poll of the 2028 presidential race.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/october-2025-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poll<\/a>, conducted by Emerson College, shows that 46 percent of participants would support Vance, 45 percent would vote for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/newsom-pull-funding-schools-agree-not-racially-discriminate-trumps-new-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsom<\/a>, and 10 percent were undecided.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of the lawmakers have formally announced a bid for president, but are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/06\/us\/politics\/trump-vance-rubio-maga-2028.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seen<\/a> as their parties&rsquo; the president were inauthentic during an appearance on &ldquo;The Will Cain Show&rdquo; in August.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom has also led the effort to gerrymander California in response to Texas&rsquo; mid-decade redistricting. California voters will vote on a Newsom-backed map that seeks to flip five seats from Republican to Democratic via Proposition 50 on Nov. 4 &mdash; an effort that has received a mixed reception from voters in the Golden State.<\/p>\n<p>Vance is also tied up in the redistricting battle, as he has made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/08\/07\/vance-indiana-00497634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two<\/a> trips to Indiana in three months to push for the state to redraw its lines to add more Republican seats.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s unclear if the effort will succeed, as Republican Indiana Gov. Mike Braun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/08\/vance-indiana-redistricting-00598104#:~:text=Indiana%20Gov.%20Mike%20Braun%2C%20a%20Republican%2C%20conveyed%20his%20concerns%20about%20the%20redistricting%20effort%E2%80%99s%20chances%20in%20the%20state%20Senate%20to%20the%20White%20House%20last%20week%2C%20two%20people%20familiar%20with%20those%20discussions%20told%20POLITICO.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the White House in early October he was concerned about the effort&rsquo;s chances in the State Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/stephanopoulos-cuts-off-jd-vance-ends-interview-called-going-weird-left-wing-rabbit-hole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vance<\/a> and Newsom also exchanged blows over social media in June following President Donald Trump&rsquo;s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles to quell protests against immigration raids and protest border patrol agents in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Emerson College&rsquo;s poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters and was conducted Oct. 13 and 14.
