Throughout his political career, Mamdani has treated Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank as if they were extensions of New York City, expressing strong negative views about Israel and supportive attitudes towards Palestinian causes. However, following a recent peace deal between Israel and Hamas-which included the return of Israeli hostages and a ceasefire-Mamdani has notably refrained from expressing clear opinions on disarming Hamas, despite reports of ongoing public executions by the group in Gaza.

The article highlights the inconsistency between Mamdani’s past outspoken comments, which often criticized Israel and promoted Palestinian resistance, and his current evasiveness on pressing issues related to Hamas’s actions. It points out his previous controversial statements, including calls to “globalize the intifada” and a vow to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin netanyahu if he visited new York under Mamdani’s mayorship. The piece implies that Mamdani’s current silence is politically motivated, attempting to avoid alienating voters as the mayoral election approaches, and portrays him as a politician willing to shift positions for electoral gain.

Zohran Mamdani has, throughout his time representing New York City in the state assembly and now running for its mayor, treated Israel, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank as the sixth, seventh, and eighth boroughs of NYC, respectively. The living Israeli hostages taken during the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack — 20 in total still remained — were returned, hostilities stopped, and the group that has governed Gaza since 2006 agreed in principle to give up power.

But not without a final round of reprisals to remind everyone just who Hamas is/was (let’s hope we’re talking about the group in the past tense sooner rather than later).
