This decision deals a significant blow to democratic hopes of winning a Senate seat in the deep-red state, where finding a strong candidate to challenge Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy has been a major concern. Edwards stated on social media that after careful consideration, he decided it was not the right time to return to public office, prioritizing his family life instead. He expressed concern over the current political direction of the country and pledged to support efforts to counteract extremist politicians as a private citizen. Edwards previously won two terms as governor in a heavily Republican state, which had given Democrats optimism about his potential Senate bid. With Edwards out, the Democratic field remains empty, while cassidy faces primary challenges from several Republican candidates aligned with conservative factions.

Ex-Louisiana Democratic Gov.
