With the shutdown causing the first missed military paycheck since its start, veteran lawmakers warn that this financial uncertainty is distracting troops from their mission readiness and the broader security threats they face. House Republicans, including Rep. Elise Stefanik and Rep. Jen Kiggans, are pushing for the “Pay Our Troops Act,” a bill that would ensure military personnel continue to receive pay despite the shutdown. Though, House Speaker Mike Johnson has resisted bringing a standalone bill to a vote, insisting pressure remain on the senate to pass the existing funding bill. Democrats also support the measure but criticize republican leadership for keeping Congress recessed and not allowing bipartisan discussions. Meanwhile, the White House has not committed to pushing a standalone pay bill but is exploring choice options, such as using tariff revenues, to pay troops amid the political deadlock. The situation underscores the widening impact of the shutdown beyond politics, increasingly affecting American service members and raising tension among lawmakers.

Military veterans in Congress sound alarm on troop shutdown hardship

Military personnel are set to miss their first paycheck as the government shutdown continues, raising concerns among House Republicans that it could hurt mission readiness with no solution in sight.

Veteran lawmakers have begun sending warning signals about the military’s ability to perform if servicemembers are spending time worrying about not receiving a paycheck come Oct. 15, the first day a paycheck could be skipped since the beginning of the shutdown.

Recommended Stories

Shutdown will cause many ‘Democrat-oriented’ federal workers to be fired, Trump warns

House GOP won’t whip against bill to release the Jeffrey Epstein files: Emmer

Trump administration dials up heat on Democrats as government shutdown set to enter third week

This milestone has increased pressure on House GOP leadership to bring back the lower chamber in efforts to find a solution, because it will be one of the first real-life impacts on the American people outside of the political beltway, made up of the areas near Washington.

REPUBLICANS ARE PUSHING THESE FIVE DEMOCRATS TO FLIP ON FUNDING BILL

“I remember going through a shutdown,” Rep.
