United Imaging has collaborated with the Chinese military and the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in 2013, several employees were charged with illegally transferring nonpublic NIH research information to Chinese entities in exchange for bribes. Despite concerns, united Imaging&#8217;s equipment is widely used in major U.S.research institutions, including NIH-funded labs like the University of Utah and Harvard-affiliated hospitals. The company has also received ample NIH funding to develop new PET scan technology. Experts warn that Chinese national security laws could compel companies like United Imaging to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/moveit-hack-claims-calpers-and-genworth-as-millions-more-victims-impacted\/\" title=\"Calpers and Genworth among millions affected by MOVEit hack.\">share sensitive data<\/a> with the CCP.U.S. agencies, including the FDA and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, have expressed worries about Chinese-made medical devices possibly containing security vulnerabilities. In response, the U.S. Senate passed the Biosecure Act to block federal contracts with risky biotechnology firms, aiming to protect American health data from CCP access. Mass General Brigham, a Harvard-affiliated hospital that serves as one of the nation&rsquo;s leading biomedical research organizations, similarly, used an NIH grant to <a href=\"https:\/\/global.united-imaging.com\/en\/news-center\/uih-story-list\/revolutionizing-the-pet-imaging-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">purchase <\/a>hardware manufactured by United Imaging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Illustrating how widespread the use of these machines is, a search of Google Scholar &mdash; a popular repository for academic work &mdash; turns up thousands of research articles mentioning <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?hl=en&amp;as_sdt=0%2C47&amp;q=%22United+Imaging%22&amp;btnG=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Imaging<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?hl=en&amp;as_sdt=0%2C47&amp;q=uEXPLORER&amp;btnG=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> uEXPLORER<\/a>, its flagship PET scanner. The research, some of which <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7678879\/pdf\/nihms-1645534.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occurred<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/?term=uEXPLORER&amp;sort=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NIH-funded labs<\/a>, often notes that hardware manufactured by United Imaging was <a href=\"https:\/\/jnm.snmjournals.org\/content\/66\/supplement_1\/25136.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/jnm.snmjournals.org\/content\/62\/supplement_1\/1697.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the course<\/a> of research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The development of uEXPLORER was itself a joint venture between the University of California, Davis, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6424228\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supported <\/a>by NIH funding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>United Imaging&rsquo;s ties to China are not particularly obscure.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the state-run newspaper <em>China Daily <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/subsites.chinadaily.com.cn\/jiading\/2021-11\/08\/c_710360.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that United Imaging had received a government award recognizing its research alongside the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army General Hospital as well as the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences. United Imaging has a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.zj-inv.cn\/news\/227.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint research and development presence<\/a> in Wuhan alongside the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has collaborated with the academy in developing its hardware.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3794942\/ccp-funded-research-flooded-academic-journals-trump-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chinese Academy of Sciences<\/a> operates under the State Council, the &ldquo;executive body of the supreme organ of state power&rdquo; in China, and is led by CCP member Hou Jianguo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jianguo wrote in 2020, shortly after being selected as the organization&rsquo;s president, that it &ldquo;will be guided by [Chinese President] Xi Jinping&rsquo;s thoughts on socialism with Chinese characteristics for [a] new era.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond mere presence in NIH-funded labs, the research agency has also provided funding that has helped United Imaging develop new technology. United Imaging, alongside Yale University and UC Davis, for instance, received <a href=\"https:\/\/taggs.hhs.gov\/Detail\/AwardDetail?arg_AwardNum=U01EB029811&amp;arg_ProgOfficeCode=57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly $10 million<\/a> from the NIH to <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11294061\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">develop <\/a>new PET scan technology in September 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Critics of China are often quick to point to the country&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiley.law\/newsletter-Mar-2021-PIF-US-Businesses-Must-Navigate-Significant-Risk-of-Chinese-Government-Access-to-Their-Data#:~:text=The%20laws%20compel%20businesses%20to%20share%20data,*%20Seize%20communications%20equipment%20and%20other%20property\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national security laws<\/a>, which could be leveraged by the CCP to demand sensitive data from companies like United Imaging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>China&rsquo;s desire to acquire American data isn&rsquo;t merely a hypothetical concern. Reports have found that state-sponsored hackers go to great lengths to steal Western medical data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/china-hackers-medical-data-cancer\/\">according <\/a>to <em>Wired<\/em>. Clinical trial data, information related to cancer research, and medical device intellectual property are among the most common targets of these hackers. One such attack saw 4.5 million patient records <a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/morning-breakout\/health-it-data-breach-community-health-systems-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stolen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. authorities are taking these threats seriously.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The FDA, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the American Hospital Association have all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/23\/china-made-medical-devices-are-all-over-us-and-the-feds-are-worried.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed concerns<\/a> about the proliferation of Chinese-made medical devices in the United States.
