The lawmakers are demanding the release of internal records related to these actions, arguing the constitutional concerns outweigh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-rejects-trump-bid-to-shield-financial-records\/\" title=\"Supreme ... Bid To Shield Financial ...\">grand jury secrecy rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Arctic Frost&#8221; investigation initially targeted Trump-related matters but expanded to include surveillance on at least 92 republican-aligned individuals and organizations. Republicans allege that the Biden administration weaponized federal law enforcement against political opponents. Despite calls for clarity, the Senate Judiciary Committee will not hold hearings until the Department of Justice provides the requested documents.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Smith,who resigned after Donald Trump won the 2024 election,defended his prosecutions of Trump in a detailed report,even though both cases fell apart in court. (AP Photo\/Jacquelyn Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Given that these materials relate to an unprecedented collection of records and information on sitting members of Congress and raise serious constitutional concerns, Congress&rsquo; need for these records clearly outweighs any interest in secrecy,&rdquo; the lawmakers wrote to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel.<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic Frost investigation began in April 2022 under then-FBI agent Timothy Thibault, during then-Director Chris Wray&rsquo;s tenure, and was transferred to Smith&rsquo;s office in November 2022. Grassley and Johnson have said the operation eventually evolved into Smith&rsquo;s Jan. 6 prosecution against President Donald Trump following his 2020 election defeat to former President Joe Biden, raising questions about the possible blending of political and prosecutorial motives within the department.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino disclosed that by September 2023, the bureau&rsquo;s Washington Field Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/arctic_frost_toll_analysis_of_us_senators.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possessed call logs from nine Republican lawmakers<\/a> for the period surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Those records, obtained via secret subpoenas, included tolling data for senators such as Josh Hawley (R-MO), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>The scope of Arctic Frost went beyond targeting Trump and Republican lawmakers. The operation also placed at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3812667\/biden-fbi-targeted-92-conservative-groups-arctic-frost-charlie-kirk-turning-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">92 Republican-aligned individuals and organizations under federal scrutiny<\/a>, according to a 2023 FBI form outlining details about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-era-fbi-targeted-92-conservative-groups-including-tpusa\/\" title=\"Biden-era ... targeted 92 conservative groups, including TPUSA\">internal bank subpoena logs<\/a> the FBI sought under the Biden administration. Among them were Charlie Kirk&rsquo;s Turning Point USA, the Republican National Committee, the Republican Attorneys General Association, the Conservative Partnership Institute, the America First Policy Institute, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley and Johnson, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/press\/rep\/releases\/grassley-johnson-make-public-whistleblower-records-revealing-doj-and-fbi-plot-to-pin-trump-in-jack-smith-elector-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first made the public aware of the Arctic Frost investigation in January<\/a>, have accused the Biden administration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-shattering-all-fundraising-records-after-fbi-mar-a-lago-raid-son\/\" title=\"... \u2018Shattering\u2019 All Fundraising ... Mar-a-Lago Raid: Son\">weaponizing federal law enforcement<\/a> against political opponents, but they said the Senate Judiciary Committee will not hold public hearings on Arctic Frost or Smith&rsquo;s work until the DOJ produces the requested documents.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The FBI told us many of the records associated with this matter are hidden behind grand jury secrecy rules,&rdquo; Grassley said Thursday. &ldquo;Attorney General Bondi must take immediate steps to seek a waiver and produce records to the committee.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Republicans who signed the letter but were not subjected to the surveillance effort include Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT), among others, who say the episode represents a &ldquo;uniquely exceptional circumstance&rdquo; that demands full transparency about the FBI&rsquo;s coordination with the Biden White House.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/author\/kaelan-deese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GRASSLEY: NO JACK SMITH, ARCTIC FROST HEARINGS UNTIL DOJ HANDS OVER MORE RECORDS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In June 2023, then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, responding to reporters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/us-attorney-general-garland-defends-trump-special-counsel-2023-06-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected accusations<\/a> that the Trump prosecutions under Smith were politically driven. He said that he appointed Smith precisely to reinforce the Justice Department&rsquo;s commitment to independence and accountability. However, the House Judiciary Committee in August that year alleged that Jay Bratt, a senior aide in Smith&rsquo;s office, had met with the Biden White House counsel&rsquo;s office <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/republicans-launch-inquiry-jack-smiths-office-meeting-biden-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;multiple times&rdquo;<\/a> prior to Trump&rsquo;s indictments.<\/p>\n<p>Smith, who resigned as special counsel after Trump won the 2024 election, issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/storage\/Report-of-Special-Counsel-Smith-Volume-1-January-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 146-page report defending<\/a> his dual prosecutions of Trump related to classified documents and the 2020 election, both of which collapsed in court ahead of the November election.
