Some GOP members, like Rep. Kevin Kiley, have expressed frustration over the House remaining in recess for a third week amid furloughs affecting approximately 750,000 federal workers and unpaid military personnel. Rep. Jen Kiggans has urged Johnson to pass legislation ensuring military members continue to receive pay, but Johnson has refused to bring the House back into session, insisting the House had fulfilled its obligation by passing a short-term funding bill in September and putting pressure on Senate Democrats to pass it.

Several republican aides criticized Johnson’s strategy, comparing it to tactics used by former senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and warning it could either be effective or damaging. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the House to return to session to address key issues and build consensus within the GOP.

Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced accusing Johnson of delaying the swearing-in of Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva and keeping the House in recess to avoid a discharge petition that would force a vote on releasing files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Johnson denies these claims, stating Grijalva will be sworn in once Senate funding legislation passes.

The government shutdown began after the Senate repeatedly failed to approve the House GOP’s continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21. Democrats have proposed their own extension with provisions opposed by Republicans, including extending Obamacare subsidies and restoring funding to NPR and PBS, but it too has been rejected by the Senate. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer aims to keep his caucus united to negotiate terms favorable to Democrats, though only a few Democrats have supported the GOP plan so far.

Johnson faces growing GOP unrest as House stays home during shutdown

Speaker Mike Johnson‘s (R-LA) decision to keep the House out of session is starting to irritate some members of his own party, as the government shutdown enters its second week.

Rep.
