A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers,led by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), introduced legislation on the two-year anniversary of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel. The bills honor victims and hostages of the attack, which killed about 1,200 people and left 48 hostages, including two Americans, still captive. The proposed Oct. 7 Congressional Gold Medal Act would award Congress’s highest civilian honor<\/a> to American victims and hostages. Additional measures include a resolution condemning Hamas’s actions, demanding hostage release, supporting israel’s right to self-defense, and backing humanitarian aid, and also an education act to develop curriculum on the attack and antisemitism.<\/p>\n

The legislation has strong bipartisan support and backing from Jewish and national security organizations<\/a>. Lawmakers emphasized the importance of remembering the victims, securing the hostages’ release, and pursuing peace. The bills coincide with ongoing ceasefire and hostage negotiations in Egypt, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, based on a 20-point peace plan that includes a ceasefire, phased Israeli withdrawal, hostage release, and eventual Hamas disarmament. Advocates say the legislation reflects moral clarity and unity in addressing the conflict and advancing peace.
