Dick Durbin, D-Ill., ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, opened the oversight hearing of the Department of Justice (DOJ) pushing a new narrative Democrats have latched on to: the lie that ICE agents zip-tied children during a Chicago raid.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the middle of the night, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >federal agents pulled women<\/a> and children out of their beds, crashed down the doors to their homes, destroyed their apartments, zip-tied children and others, and detained immigrants and U.S. citizens alike for hours in vans,&rdquo; Durbin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BScLWLIT0Ck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>. &ldquo;When one witness complained about the treatment of the small children, an agent laughed at her and said, &lsquo;F them kids.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-915503124\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/pG4ISCPOBjI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gave<\/a> a dramatic description of this same story during a Monday press conference and has been repeating it every chance he gets.<\/p>\n<p>But Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin posted that &ldquo;children were never zip-tied.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a shameful and disgusting lie. This woman described kids &ldquo;zip-tied to each other,&rdquo; which is different than the handcuff formation usually seen with zip ties, so even her claim about what she allegedly saw is not clear. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"Qg03ECreX9JKws78aWxmGvZBLqDRcnST2tOpI6lu\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So the 4th amendment doesn&rsquo;t apply in Chicago?  Each apartment in that building is a separate residence requiring probable cause to enter and search and requiring a warrant to do so. Detaining individuals by zip-ties for a lengthy period of time is an arrest. Politicians and defense attorneys like to use words like &ldquo;kids&rdquo; to conjure a mental picture of frightened toddlers, but 17-year-old gang bangers are &ldquo;kids&rdquo; too, so the mention of &ldquo;children&rdquo; must be evaluated critically.<\/p>\n<p>When the narrative began, Bill Melugin of Fox News explained the background on this widely circulated photo that purportedly showed an ICE officer zip-tying a child.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared heartbreaking until it was revealed that this was not ICE abusing children; rather the video portrayed a dad posing for a joke photo with his own child. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"AZ7762IIY8g1zyvUbdoVJT4WKPxjgET819OVmFn3ht5ajGeRpYfHW4GRwzCJbLaD\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This claim is starting to spread but is completely fake &amp; isn&rsquo;t even ICE. The persistent left repeatedly seizes on hoaxes like these to take down the Trump administration and its efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-calls-on-dhs-to-add-20000-officers-for-deportation-efforts-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Trump calls on DHS to add 20,000 off...rs for deportation efforts ... Washington Examiner\">enforce immigration law &#038;mdash<\/a>; if it can just repeat this lie enough times without it being refuted. <\/p>\n<p>Durbin spoke the zip-tie lie into the record during the oversight hearing during his opening remarks, giving it the air of credibility because of his position. But Durbin did not ask Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was there to answer questions, about it.
