David Hogg,former Vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC),has made his first endorsement in a congressional primary,targeting Democratic incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan. Hogg, who previously advocated for primarying ineffective incumbents during his time at the DNC and lost his position partly due to that stance, is now leading a political group called leaders We Deserve. He endorsed state Rep. Donavan McKinney, 33, against Thanedar, criticizing Thanedar as out-of-touch, ineffective, and self-serving, noting his use of taxpayer dollars for self-promotion, large donations from AIPAC, and poor constituent services.<\/p>\n

In contrast, McKinney has been praised for securing funds for gun violence prevention<\/a>, replacing toxic lead pipes, and proposing legislation against monopolistic utilities.McKinney also has support from Senator Bernie Sanders and the Justice Democrats, a group supporting young progressive challengers<\/a>. Thanedar welcomed Hogg’s endorsement for McKinney’s “people-powered campaign.” Earlier in the year,Thanedar faced criticism from Democrats for filing impeachment articles against former President trump,viewed by many as self-serving.
