Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has warned that federal subsidies supporting airline services to rural and small communities will expire as soon as Sunday if the ongoing government shutdown continues<\/a>.These subsidies are provided through the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, which ensures commercial air service to smaller U.S. communities. Funding for the program was temporarily extended using transfers from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), but will run out soon. This will impact all 50 states, with Alaska being the largest recipient. The shutdown has also increased stress among air traffic controllers, raising concerns about potential furloughs of support staff at training facilities. Despite these challenges, Duffy assured that airspace safety remains a priority. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association supports an end to the shutdown to avoid further disruptions.
